Car won't start (changed battery and tested all of the fuses)
A few days ago my car turned on just fine, I went to my doctor appointment but when I got out my car wouldn't start anymore. I tried jumping it but it didn't work. Went and bought a new battery, installed it, and still nothing. Towed the car to my friend's garage and they:
C300, 2010, 106,000 miles on it. I've needed to do service A5 37days ago (before when the car did turn on)
What do you guys think it could be? Mercedes charges $189 just for a diagnostics
Edit: When I put the key into the ignition it does show the millage and everything else, but when I turn the key it doesn't show the engine lights and those other little lights turning on. I can even go take a picture or video of it and upload it just to make sure I'm not missing anything.
Edit 2 (6/21): I got a new battery for the spare key and also have a basic OBD2 tester. The OBD didn't pick up any error codes but I ordered the best icarsoft one so I will try that to when it comes in tomorrow. When I insert a key I do NOT hear the ESL unlocking and locking sound. I think the ESL has failed. I found this great video about how to fix it but I need to get the ESL to go into unlock position first.
- checked all of the fuses and they were working fine.
- checked the new installed battery and it is good to go as well
- checked the old battery and it had failed. They tried recharging it and it failed that test too (last time I had changed a battery it was Nov. 2016).
- the key locks and unlocks the car
- the car recognizes that a key has been inserted and when the door is open it gives a warning to take the key with me.
- To put the car in neutral I have to take leather cover around the shift lever OFF and press that yellow notch. Without doing that, even with the key in the ignition, the shift lever is locked.
- when turning the key all the dashboard lights won't come on. The radio comes on, the headlights will turn on, the lights inside the car can be turned on but all the engine lights and everything else in the dashboard won't come on.
- My spare key has a dead battery but when trying to turn the car on it did the same thing as my other key

Is there a diagnostic tool that you guys would recommend I purchase to see what could be the issue or that would not be possible since the car is not giving any error messages?

I just added an update to the original post. I believe the ESL has failed because when I insert/remove the key I do not hear the ESL unlocking/locking.
The steering wheel is locked. Looking back at it 4 days ago when I put it in neutral I could barely move the steering wheel...i basically couldn't.
Might need an ESL emulator to test it out.

Yes, ESL........ (EIS & ESL)
On my car when the steering lock failed, I could switch it on, put it in neutral, hoist on flatbed, not the same regarding neutral as yours.
In my case they 1st replaced the EIS, but it was not that, then the steering lock which was the cheapest(Under gurantee). My car was 3-Weeks in workshop. Dates on invoice indicate they replaced ESL during the last week and then could get it to work.
When I inserted the key, I did not hear the whirr sound, ....not sure about your situation regarding the whirr sound, however my cars neutral behaved different than yours.
Lets see how the neautral symptom matters...

I wonder why my car didn't go into neutral without me having to do it manually.

Hi Dave, thank you for the heads up. Could you please explain a little more what you mean by not having a clear coat put on the terminal before assembling it? As in clear coat of paint?

I assume a clear coat of paint will make the battery & terminals look shiny, but leave poor connection on terminals if not removed from terminals.

when the Mercedes battery was replaced was the headlights turned off and battery disconnected for 3 or more minutes before connecting the new battery?
