C180 CGI - timing chain replacement
So long story short, two weeks ago the engine in my C180 started to rattle when starting cold and struggle to start. Took it to a garage and after a few days the guys said its the timing gears, but not only they didn't ask if I wanted it to be changed, they just done it and charged me £800+. What they didn't know is my dashcam runs 24/7 and it recorded the whole job, and me being curious and not trusting them I had a quick look at the video and it turns out all they did is change the gears and not the chain... I thought the whole thing comes as a kit and it should be done as a whole... I had the timing chain done at 126k miles with the exact same symptoms about 2 years ago (turned out it wasn't necessary, it was one of the VVT valves. Just me being an Idiot after reading many stories that the chain likes to snap or jump...) and done around 50k miles on it...
So the question is - have I been f***ed over? Or it is ok to do just the gears?
Thanks and best regards, smiff.
