Fluttering Feel / Sound
Hey, I have a 2009 c300 4matic sport the car has 202,000 miles! At low RPMs (1500 - 3000) the car seems to flutter sound wise and feel wise. The rpm needle doesn’t flutter but the engine does? I changed plugs last year that didn’t help. The secondary air pump thing failed a few days ago but the car has had this feeling for years before the check engine light came on for that. Any ideas what could be going on?

Scan with a Mercedes-specific scanner for any codes. Do NOT use a generic OBD scanner. iCarsoft MB V3.0, Launch Creader Elite MB, Foxwell NTS510, BlueDriver are all good and available on Amazon. Some are multi vehicle, but all will scan specifically Mercedes.

I mean do I have to lay it out? I mean no **** I can probably tell from getting it scanned. I was hoping that someone would come across this thread and be like hey man I had the same exact issue and it was blah blah blah, isn’t that what forums are for? You may have just responded and said take it to the dealer.

OK. Take it to the dealer.
With your attitude, I'll be surprised you get any more help. You don't (or can't) even tell us what the CEL is for and somehow we're supposed to know what's wrong. You've been a member since 2011 and on your 4th or 5th post, you want someone to solve your problems for you? You want a solution? Replace everything until it works.
Good luck!

Maybe the high pressure fuel pump.
Nevermind, I think you have the same engine as me and doesnt have it.
Would be helpful to see if its showing any codes and what they are. Thats where i would start.

Thanks Tim! I looked it up those are the same exact symptoms that I am having. I appreciate you taking the time and helping me out with this. Thanks for utilizing the forum on how it should be utilized even though I only have 2 posts. God Bless You

I looked up your symptoms and a few people ended up replacing there high pressure fuel pump and it seemed to fix the issue. But i looked and think you have the M272 engine, which does not have that. The fuel pump is under the back seat.
What do you mean flutter? Im trying to picture what it is doing.

The W204 comes in a few different engines, what engine do you have? The listing you linked to is for the 3.5 which I believe is the M276 direct injection and were available 2012-2014 in the C300. I have the M272 3.0 which is port injection and dont see a high pressure pump anywhere, I was under the hood earlier and it seems the fuel line coming from the back goes directly to the fuel rail which feeds the injectors. I could be totally wrong, but im not seeing it on mine at least.

with the engine cover and air cleaner on. The difference between the M272 and M276 is usually clear.

E30 is the 3.0, same as I have.
heres what the fuel line looks like, comes from the rear then directly to the fuel rail.
Fuel line in yellow. Pay no attention to the red arrows.

I think if there was an issue with the fuel pump you would be getting some check engine codes. But fuel pressure is pretty simple to check. Higher end scanners will show the fuel pressure, or you can easily hook up a pressure gauge to the port on the fuel rail. I circled it in yellow.
Just unscrew the cap and hook up pressure gauge.
If you have a scanner it may show fuel pressure.
Heres the fuel pump diagram if there is something wrong.

The secondary air pumped recently just threw a check engine light but this sputtering has been happening well before the CEL. I was reading up on the Secondary air pump and saw something that the pump could control/mess up the air to fuel ratio, I wonder if that is what's happening? Also I noticed that both my intake vents/tubs that connect to the air box are broken so maybe the engine is pulling in hot air also causing this?
