Traffic Sign Assist with Speed Limit Assist (in Australia)

Now as I understand, the traffic sign assist uses the cameras in the front windshield and is currently country dependent right?

Does anyone know if the Speed Limit Assist only works via the visual sign recognition or does it also take info from a navigation database?

Australian customers unfortunately seem to miss out on both of these features. I can't find any official statement as to why but came across some story which seemed to indicate that varying signs across different states were to blame. Has anyone ever contacted Daimler for an explanation or a statement if or when the system might be activated in Australia?

In the UK it does not use any information from a navigation database. It simply reads the speed limit signs.

Update: I enquired with Daimler (Australia) and here's the official response in case anyone else is curious:

Thank you for your email enquiry regarding the “Speed Limit Assist” feature in the current W205 C Class.

We have taken the liberty to forward your enquiry to our Product Team for investigation and review.

We are able to confirm that no Australian vehicles are fitted with this feature.

Speed Limit Assist uses the multi-function camera (and market specific software) to interpret speed limit signs.
With variations in each Australian state’s speed limit sign displays, we are investigating from a technical perspective the interpretation of this data (across all states) and the associated software required. At this point, we have no confirmation of a launch date for Speed Limit Assist in Australia.

We are aware that the GARMIN system does provide speed limit information and have raised this point to be included within COMAND. At this point, regarding timings has not been confirmed by Germany.

We trust that this has clarified information on your enquiry.

Thank for contact Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific Pty Ltd

Fitted for but not with

Sadly that is a common issue with not just with Mercedes Benz,
and I raised this with my dealer on delivery and got the same reply.

Regardless, in my opinion these things will move into distribution maybe even as software updates, and like the airbag and seatbelt etc become common place.

The remaining vehicle is brilliant, I have mine now for a year all works as it should.

Is there room for improvement? Well, yes of course, but for me it is simply the best thing on the road by far in this class at this time.

Contrary to the Daimler response below I imported my GLA220D from UK where the speed sign recognition was working. When I drove the vehicle off the dock in WA the speed sign WAS working immediately, however map couldnt locate the car as he map software was still UK software. As soon as the map software was updated to the Australian version the sign recognition stopped working. Not sure why this needs to happen. At least for WA it could work.

Yea it's silly. AFAIK the sign recognition uses the map data to confirm or correlate the info received from the visual sign recognition and if one part of that equation is missing, the whole thing falters. I managed to enable the feature using Xentry, but then the speed info on the map data was missing so it never worked.

All because of the stupid irregularities around different signs I believe (including school zones etc.). I've since bought a 5 series and have it working in that without issues. It still gets confused when it sees timed zones (e.g. schools or on the back of speed limited trucks), but you can chose whether to adopt the new speed in your limiter or cruise control. I remember hearing that they've since enabled it for the E & S class to keep up with the competitors in that space (namely BMW), but don't quote me on that.
