rain sensing wiper issues

I have ordered and received my 2016 C180 couple of months ago. Overall its a good car. Especially It think intelligent light system is best of its kind and is a must for every w205 owner. However, I am experiencing a strange issue with my wipers. They are set to low sensitivity mode and with rain no problem. They start and stop but when there is small drops or a mist, it keeps running and I make them stop by turning the wipers to off position. I don't know whether it's a normal thing because it is my first car with rain sensors but it doesn't seem to me a normal operation. Is there anyone experiencing such thing?

Clean the glass near the sensor (behind the rear view mirror). It could be the sensor is seeing a smear instead of clean glass.

Mine does it too. (Must be an eastern Massachusetts thing. We do get a lot a mist/drizzle around here.) Only once (last week) have the wipers run continuously. At all other times, the wipers have operated frequently, but not continuously. I like a really clear windshield, so even when the wipers operate frequently, I consider that better than running the wipers on low speed.

I've always hated the rain sensing wiper system. Just give me the good old delay system that I can set and I'll be happy.

My previous car was a JDM Honda Fit. It had the delay system. It was such a simple and useful feature. I passed by from dealership after work to ask about if they can change the sensitivity and they said its not possible to do such thing. I am not convinced with the answer but not going to try it again. In misty/dizzle conditions, I am going to keep it closed.

Keep silicone & mineral salt deposits off the screen in the sensor area. As mentioned above the system can be calibrated with a Star. My CLK has it just right.

Please indicate where recalibration was "mentioned above." What is a "Star" and how does one use it to recalibrate the rain sending system?

Nanook says "dealer can set sensitivity". A Star is the diagnostic computer that dealers use to interrogate all the cars systems for faults via the OBDII port & a multiplexer. Other than fault diagnosis a Star allows the readjustment of certain parameters of the cars systems such as service interval, fuel octane rating, auto sensing functions, new software flashes etc. Also able to turn market dependent functions on & off. In developer mode one can change all software on the car (dangerous & most Dealer Stars do not have developer mode activated.)

Further to this a Star contains the WIS (Workshop Information System) & EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue). It can also be hot linked into Benz Security centres & live to Germany for difficult issues diagnosis.

The car was sitting in garage during the last 4 days. Today I washed it and clean the windscreen with claybar, applied autoglym glass polish and applied 303 protectant to wipers. I am going to visit dealer to order a boot liner on wednesday. There is always a good amount of mist during this time of year. I will check it and see what is going to happen before visiting the dealer.

mine will randomly turn on, without rain. Had it in the garage for a week, turned on the car wipers went. Everytime i turned on the car the wipers would go across the window, car never moved. The other day i was sitting in the car in a driveway talking to someone, no rain or nothing, wipers turned on once then off, about an hour later went again. They seem to turn on when no water in around, but need to have a waterfall of rain to work when actually raining. Garbage car (not just from the wipers, many other issues and the service i get) waste of my money. Anyone want a new '15 C300?

Did you ever think to maybe just turn them on when it's raining?

Ya, I usually have to, but isn't that what "rain sensing wipers" are supposed to do automatically? I didn't realize I paid for a feature that I still have to intervene with. Just like my LED package headlights, they are supposed to be auto Hi/low but I don't use em because they are crap, half the time they blind the driver's cuz they don't turn off and the other half they don't turn on. I have to "manually" do it. So much for auto.

I think your expectation is maybe a little unrealistic. I've owned a lot of cars with rain sensing wipers, but just about every one of them did what you described and since it's just a simple click to turn them on when it's raining and off when it's not, it just doesn't seem to me it's an issue worthy of being upset over.

It's not just the wipers, it the car, the service department, the overall quality. My 08 Escalade has rain sense wipers, works great, I leave it in auto and they work when needed, don't think my expectations are too high. I paid 56k for a MB I expect a quality car, not something that may or may not work. I expect a car with no rattles, no speaker issues, no funky smells coming through the car, and customer service that doesn't tell me how everything is my fault or that's how the car was designed. My Infiniti was great, customer service, no questions asked they looked at it. Didn't think that was asking much. Remember this is " the best or nothing " but then again maybe I am expecting too much from a top quality car. BMW, Audi, MB all top cars am I wrong, or did I buy a ridiculously expensive Kia??

Well, I've had no issues with my 2016 C300 Sport. I don't leave the wiper's on though as I instinctively turn them on when I need them and turn them off when I don't.

It's clear you don't really like your car and that's a shame. Maybe it's time you sold or traded to something you'd like better?

Cleaning the windshield worked perfectly. I haven't faced any issues yet after cleaning with claybar. It looks like mineral deposits accumulate due to hard water in my area while I wash the car.
