Write Up: Burmester Audison/Focal/JL Upgrade

I've had the system in the car for a few weeks now and finally got around to doing the write up. Great upgrade. Totally transforms the stock Burmester audio.

This is a great post, I will definitely do this before summer hits! Since the day I picked up the car, I noticed how the system was a bit lacking in the low end and when turned up was very harsh to my ears. I already put a sub in the back, and although that has helped a lot, this is the next step. Do you have a wiring diagram for your trunk setup? Thank you for this! Such great info

I'd love to take credit for the first class install, but my shop handled it. I just picked out the gear and wrote the check, and did the Prima configuration and tuning.

On the output side of the factory amp, you'll cut the leads for the left front door, left front sub, right front sub, right front door, right rear door and left rear door speakers. Those will get routed to the input side of the JL Fix 82. (Burmester wiring diagram is attached below)

You'll come off the Fix 82 with a single fiber optic Toslink cable directly into the optical input on the Prima. (When tuning the Prima, make sure to select the Optical input. )

This is how the speaker assignment looks. Speakers with a check box are bridged. Speakers connected with a green bracket are combined on a passive crossover.

This is the channel assignment. Note the two channels assigned to each front sub.

Coming off the high side of the Prima, you'll run speaker leads back to the point you cut the factory speaker leads and splice back into them. Run a cable from the Prima's sub out jack to your outboard sub and amp.

The only bit I'm not sure about is configuring the Fix 82 as I wasn't there for that. But the tech who did it said it set itself up using the provided CD in about ten minutes.

Hey Mike,

Which shop did you get this installed? Is there a specific type of shop you recommend taking this to? I'm based in SoCal.

Mike5215 05-12-2016 06:39 PM

This was done at Sound Depot in Gainesville Florida. I think any authorized Audison retailer can do the install. My car was entered into the nations largest pro installer database with stuff they learned doing the install. It was the first Prima in a W205 Burmester, but an installer out in CA had done a BitOne which is very similar. The guy in CA had figured out how to defeat the VNC using the JL Fix 82.

I'll contact my guy and get the contact info for that CA shop and post it here.

Thanks - Keep me posted!

Can I use this subwoofer with the AP8.9 sub out? it has a built-in amp, so no need for the JL Audio XD300

I read through your blog on the Burmester upgrade (multiple times) - I must say, that is a fantastic walk through!

I have now ordered:
  • Audison Prima AP8.9
  • JL Fix 82
  • Morel Hybrid 402s
  • JL JX 500.1D Amp
  • JL 10TW14 Subwoofer
I went with a single 10" subwoofer as I think it will provide maximum output in the space available under the floor of the trunk - my install goal is to maintain full usage of existing trunk space.

The thin line W1 from JL only needs 0.35 cu ft sealed / 0.625 cu ft ported to breathe so I am hoping a custom enclosure can be built in the recess below the trunk floor so I maintain the complete OEM look. The JX 500 is compact and runs cool.

Once my components arrive I will add pics - I will definitely be using your audison tuning file!

A great and detailed description. Do you think this would work with the AMG GTS Burmester systems?
I'm contemplating adding in a removable SAS powered bazooka bass

Hello guys, I was wondering if someone can tell me if theres power source for a add on amplifer in the trunk or I have to run wire from the battery? I dont want to modify anything just want to add another trunk subwoofer for some lows. The engine bay on the c63s doesn't have any room at all for me to feed wire through the firewall. If not does anyone have idea how can I accomplish this? A photo would be really helpful. Thanks! I hate this burmeister crap. Even my Lexus sounds better than this lol

Just a quick update. It works great. Better imaging and low end - it wakes up and brightens the imaging.
