Noise from steering

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this or if anyone's else does this.

I have a C200 AMG Line in the UK and I've only noticed this today.

Parking up today I moved the steering wheel quite fast and heard a noise come from the front end so once parked I moved the steering wheel from side to side quickly and there is definitly a noticeable noise from the front of the car which can be heard from the inside and out, not sure what it would be but sounds to me like something is loose or there is a bit of play in something to do with the steering. The noise is the same whether the car is on or off.

Does anybody else's car do this or is it something that should be looked at?

Can you describe the noise better? Knock, bang, click, squeak.. Can you video it?

I've not noticed any such noise on mine. I do get occasional knocks from the suspension over bad roads (airmatic) which the dealer has looked into and found no issue, it's very rare though and I suspect it's probably just a hose tapping the bulkhead of something as it has to be quite a bad road to reproduce it.

It's more of a knocking noise but only when you turn the steering wheel side to side quickly, it doesn't make any noise driving normally unless you turn the wheel quickly side to side.

I only noticed it because I was parking and turned the steering wheel quickly in the opposite direction.

I'll try and get a videos of the noise and see if you can hear it.

I've noticed it in my C450. Mostly when I go in reverse. Not sure what it is.

Many low profile tires show "judder" from something called the Ackerman Effect. This low speed tire hop can be felt and heard in the car, and is normal. This may be what you're experiencing.

Just thought I'd post an update.

Dealer just called me up and told me that it needs a new steering rack due to a fault. Not sure if it was a major/dangerous fault they wouldn't really tell me much over the phone.

Yes, my IS350 did this for the entire 10+ years I had it EVERY time I did a sharp turn pulling out of a parking spot

Hi,

I don’t actually have this car now but they did replace the steering rack in 2016 - I only had the car for about 6 months after it was replaced and it was fine for those 6 months.

Hi, it is translated from czech language

Service information: rack and pinion clearance
If you turn the steering wheel left / right when the vehicle is stationary, especially without power steering, you may hear a knock. This phenomenon is due to the design and is not a sign of any will or less loud steering.

I have a German C200 AMG line. My steering wheel had all kind of problems including strange noises when turning sudden left or right. I removed it and Installed the new AMG steering wheel see its picture below. All problems gone. No noise nothing. Well at least so far 😌

nice steering wheel !

Are all of the buttons working including steer wheel illumination?
It required only a new steering wheel + coding ?

how much was the total price for this ?

regards

Hi, all bottons work except cruise control. The existing stock cruise control stick still works just fine. The illumination goes on once you turn on the car. No coding required, it came with a module and airbags. Basically its a plug a play thing. No fault code or errors on the dashboard. This is an oem product. I frankly dont recall the exact cost but i have to say it is quite expensive. I purchased it from these guys: http://www.eurohausmotor.com/
Drop them an e-mail or contact this guy his name is Sam I dealt with him: whatsapp: +6689-227-7756.
Hope this helps.

If it’s still under warranty then you shouldn’t have to pay anything - if I remember correctly the car was with them for 2 days.

If you do think there is something wrong and the garage refuses to do anything then I would definitely try a different dealership.

I now have a GLC which I’ve only had for 1 year - it developed a rattle and squeaky suspension.

Took it to the dealership where I bought it from and they refused to acknowledge a problem, took it to a different one and they ended up changing the drop links and both rear shock absorbers under warranty!
