Random weird noise from steering column

1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, from Hong Kong here and I have a 2015 C250 with the AMG steering wheel.

Recently a very strange noise(turn up your volume when viewing the video pls) would appear every few days whenever the steering wheel is turned. Standing still and moving both bring that noise back.

I have noticed that the noise comes when I drive the car for extended period of time, like about an hour. But it would just go away the next day and comes back after a week or so.

Took to the dealer and they are having trouble locating the root of the problem because they couldn't bring the noise back.

Can any of you share some wisdom here? Been to the dealer twice already and couldn't get it fixed, it's annoying to say the least. :X

Not had that in mine. Sounds like a rubber/bushing noise but could be anything.

Sounds like the electric steering has a problem ... There's a motor whine that's not normal ... The w205 steering should be silent

Dealer replaced the drive shaft when it was in the shop for the first time, but the noise is still there.

I am guessing that's not the motor? Thanks

So this has been looked at...

I would not accept this car back until it is fixed

I feel the same.

The problem is that the dealer could not "re-produce" the noise while the car was at the shop. So they don't know what to fix.

It just randomly pops up one day and go away the next. The worst kind of problem.

Dealer couldn't isolate the problem so they just replace the whole drive shaft and the column, it went away after that.

Hi. I have the same issue with my car. This sound starts to come after one hour of driving. Any solutions.

chrisdean 11-14-2020 04:59 AM

It's coming from the engine bay, spray lots of WD40 down the steering column. The steering column passes through a rubber bush and that's what squeeks. It's quite surprising how the noise travels and gives the illusion that it's coming from the wheel.

Thanks. The dealership is saying rack replacement is required

Hello chrisdean, could you explain better where I should spray WD40 in order to fix this? I have the same issue on my W205.
Thank you!

Take it back to the dealership as it maybe covered under warranty however there was also a recall due to a steering issue where as they needed to add more grease to a part or see the wear and replace it.

Just squirt plenty on any exposed part of the column in the engine bay, it should work its way down to the squeaky rubber bush.

I actually heard it is an interior piece below the steering column that is making the noise unless this rubber piece is the same piece?

When I first had this problem I was convinced the noise was coming from inside the cabin so sprayed copious amounts of ptfe spray behind the wheel to no effect. only when I sprayed in the engine bay did the noise disappear.
