Production Order Status For New Vehicle

I placed my order for c63s sedan order 5 weeks ago and am now checking on the build date status with the dealer. Timing given was 3-4 months start from order to delivery with most coming in at 3 months which seems fine.

Response from dealer via email was that is that my order is still waiting for a build date.

The more i research now, shouldn't the production order have existing from an existing allocation when I ordered the car? If yes how many weeks in advance does the factory assign the build date to the PO.

Dealer said production should begin in a month. If thats true I would think the build date is already on the PO as the factory has to know its build schedule more than 4 weeks out.

Is there any reason the dealer would not have the PO and build date at this point that would confirm i really have a car allocated to be built?

Has anyone asked to see the PO at the dealership prior to taking delivery. Or mostly relied on what the dealer told them?

Thanks

The build process is absurdly opaque. The dealer can log into the factory production system every couple of days and get just the bare minimum status. When the build starts it'll show a status change, then another when the car is in the shipping center, and once it's released to the shipper, but you can't track it. It can be several days after the shipper takes it before it just shows up at the dealership.

It's crazy. If you buy a $3 mug on Amazon you can track it to your door. $80k Mercedes? Nope.

Yes unnecessarily not clear. My BMW order experience several years ago was flawless and transparent. This one not so much so far.

If the car is just in an "order bank" versus attached to an allocation how does the dealer know the approximate timeline to communicate to a customer?

So the factory gives out X number of allocations to each dealer for each model and the rest are produced as capacity allows? Then again how does everyone know timelines?

Right. When I ordered mine the dealer logged into the production system and found a car that was already scheduled to be built but the configuration wasn't locked. The car was allocated to the inventory of another dealer, so my dealer called them and traded a future allocation for their existing allocation and then that generic build was modified to my build.

I got lucky with a good sales rep and she texted me updates every couple of days, even if it was just letting me know nothing had updated. I ordered from a dealer in Montgomery AL (4 hours from the plant) so at least mine wasn't treated to a whirlwind tour of the upper midwest on the back of a hauler for three weeks.

Access to the plant is crazy tight too. Whenever my rep or anyone from the dealership goes up to Tuscaloosa they confiscate everyone's cell phones before they enter the property.

I recall my wife and I were looking into ordering her an X5 at one point and we were offered a video of the actual car being actually produced. Does BMW still do that?

Are you saying you picked your car up at the plant in Vance, AL. I'm thinking of purchasing another C Class, and I'm sure I won't be able to find my options on a car on any lot. I'm in Columbus, GA now.

No I got it at Mercedes Montgomery. But being close to the plant got it to the dealer quicker.

Yeah it wasn't really a plan. I'm in Florida but the Montgomery store happened to have a car I liked. I ended up rejecting that car but I was impressed with the dealership so I placed the order there.
