Rear Seat Belt Warning on Information Cluster (dashboard)

Hi, Mine is W205 (2015 UK model). Whenever I start the car, the rear seat belt warning shows up even though there is nothing on the rear seats at all. I click OK to clear it. If I put the seat belt buckles in, with or without passengers, the warning will not appear.

Are the rear buckles supposed to click in even there are no passenger at the back?

Yes normal and confusing. Merc cheapening out on rear seat sensors and putting up an image for you to check yourself if people are safe. Even my toyota has rear seat sensors!

But what they did do was install single-use emergency tensioners that fire whether the rear seats are occupied or not. In my accident the shop didn't catch it right away. It added a week and $4000 to the repair to replace all four belts and the related SRS module.

Youch! I thought those things were fully electric now rather than charge driven. Good point to note for anyone involved in a prang.

I don't know exactly...they may be electric for normal operation but once Pre Safe is engaged all bets are off. The car definitely takes no chances and spares no expense when it believes the occupants are in danger.

Very strange Mike. I just had a look in WIS about the pre-safe system and the retraction system is all electric and only part of the front belts (i.e. rear belts are normal inertial reel belts with no emergency retraction system). What's also interesting is that here's a note in the system about unnecessary seat belt and module replacement. Not saying it's the case here (since belt replacement should be standard after a crash), but this is no doubt a good example of repairers bolstering a quote where they can - not like the consumer is likely to know.

I know the shop owner well (MB Certified shop) and I was at the shop pretty much every day at least once to check on progress. I was there when they realized they hadn't checked the belts. (There happened to be another 205 with the same hit about a week ahead of mine that had just had the same issue.)

I tugged on the rears myself and they were cinched completely down and did not budge. Like you couldn't get a finger between them and the seat. Then the tech came back with a scanner and it definitely showed a bad SRS module. I've known the owner since he was 16 working at his dad's shop.

Can't imagine he'd intentionally pad the bill and hold the car up for nothing. It was already three weeks overdue. I'll ask him about how they determined they needed replacement next time I see him. The way my family drives it won't be long.

Aheam ... <clears throat> .. guess what I found after all.

Looks to be market/region dependent with the USA models also getting squib (charge) based rear retractors.

Oh well.. let that be a lesson for you kids - Never trust the guy on the forum.
I'll go and eat my hat now.
