What is it to discuss, AWD outruns RWD/FWD any snowy day - period!

please quote me where I said rwd or fwd gives maximum traction. Your sarcasm is unwarranted.

I agree if all tires are equal.

Of course, there is no other option. Nokian Hakka, Conti ice contact, Michelin x-ice, but all season tires are straight forward dangerous.

"I wouldn't. The RWD will have better traction than the AWD which means better handling and stopping. But I can understand people feeling more "secure" driving an AWD in bad weather."

The variable he's not taking into effect is not all A/S tires are the same...there are mediocre ones and there are better ones, and the technology for A/S tires improves every year. I've been through two New England winters now driving two different W205 4Matics equipped with 18" staggered Conti A/S run flats, and both cars were great.

Now with that said, of course an A/S tire can't match the traction of a Winter performance or snow tire, but even around my parts the roads aren't "bad" for more than 24 hours...so if the weather is that bad one needs dedicated snow tires just to get around, my expensive vehicle is staying home that day!

Got it. So he's saying a RWD car with full on snow tires has more grip than an AWD car with All Season tires all around. I guess in some really deep snow that might make sense. Generally the AWD car will be much more controllable and predictable in the typical winter slop though.

Yeah, those A/S tires have a bunch of thin sipes and grooves that can get packed with snow. Once they're packed they're as useful as a slick. Nothing to bite with. So while all four wheels may be spinning none of them are getting enough traction to make any progress. In that instance, a RWD car with chunky tread blocks, wide channels in a dedicated snow tire might actually do better in deep, loose snow.

What are the options that are must haves for this car? I know it starts at 39K or so based on mbusa.com. If you have my budget how will you option/customized it?

Is 4wd important here in Southern Oregon? or is the standard version ok?

Also what are your opinions on the new A4? I think it's cheaper and much loaded in terms of features but I don't know have any other info about Audi other than that.

My husband is a BMW guy and I really am not looking at that brand as it reminds me too much of him

Thank you!
Not that I'm trying to bring up any stereotypes, but are you really into things like performance options (handling and appearance)? Or you more biased towards comfort and luxury?

And are you looking into all variants of the C class and A4/A5? Sedans, coupes, cabriolets, and wagon.

personally, if it was me, and this was to be my only car that needs to "do it all", I'd probably get the A4 Allroad

My ex husband and I owned 3 BMWs. A 2011, 2012 and 2014 model. And they havnt reached 5k miles and all of them had irritating rattles already. Are Benz in general better built?

I'm looking for comfort and something high tech. A friend also suggested the new s90. He said that its 47k base price is more loaded/more features than a 50k C300. What do you guys think?

Benz are typically well built but the C's do rattle, or at least the early ones did, including mine. The Volvo is a good looking car but poorly reviewed for excessive cabin noise and vibration. Worth a look though.

Have you looked at the Kia Cadenza or Hyundai Genesis? The Cadenza has a very nice, comfortable interior and a quiet, luxury ride. They come fully loaded well within your budget, plus have a 100k mile warranty. They've been poor sellers lately so discounts are deep. The Genesis is also a solid car, but a bit larger than the Kia. Also very well equipped in your price range.

hazelsia,

Have you ever considered a Jaguar? My wife still loves her 340 HP supercharged V6 2017 Jaguar XE AWD R-Sport 35t...she feels it's a better car than her old 2014 BMW 328i Xdrive.

The Jaguar can also be had with AWD and a 4 cylinder turbo well equipped for around $50,000...and comes with free maintenance for 5 years!

We test drove all three engines in the Jag XE. Coming from an oil car family (VW) we first tried the diesel. We did not care for the performance and moved on to the 2.0 gasser. This only comes in RWD as of our visit. It was fun to drive. We then tried the 6cyl in AWD. This car would have been my choice of the three had we gone that way. It ran like a bat out of hell!

After that visit we stopped into the MB store and 3 hours later we drove our C300 home. My wife and I both agree that the C300 just felt more substantial than the XE

Oh I agree with you there, the interior of the W205 is best in class for sure.

I just thought I'd throw the Jaguar choice out there since she was considering other cars in the Benz's class. Yes it's a rung lower than the C Class when it comes to the interior and overall build quality, but it's at least the Mercedes Benz's equal when it comes to performance & handling...plus the 5 years free maintenance is a nice bonus as well.

How in the world is this a relevant comparison?
When did Porsche become a car to compare with an everyday commute Mercedes c?

When everypne started to derail the thread to be about AWD vs 2WD. To help the OP to decide if she needs AWD where she lives
