If it's the strut it'll be louder outside the car.

Suggestion: 1) Buy yourself a suction cup microphone (
Amazon Amazon
).
2) If you have a voice recorder or digital recorder, put the mike on various places along the body, under the hood, etc., and replicate the noise (bouncing car, driving, whatever). You may need to get an extension cord to get the cable into the cabin and I wouldn't do extended drives with this in the engine compartment as it will likely melt.
3) Record the sound driving ALWAYS along the same stretch of rode(s).
4) Measure the sound level (this would be easy if you could record somehow to an iPhone or similar).
5) Play a version of Marco Polo, hotter/colder, etc., and try and find the place where the noise is LOUDEST!!!!
6) Voila, poor man's chassis ears and you've diagnosed yourself and can bring back to the dealer with information in hand (i.e., EXACT or CLOSE location to where the sound is emanating and that might be enough for them to diagnose it, if it's not obvious to you based on the location)....

Hope this helps!!!!!

The dealer should be able to replace the shock absorber and find out. Or have they already tried to replace it?

A duplicate account was created by this d-bag that I just got banned on the 221 forum. He's this guy:

"*******, Inc owned by Vitaliy Sokolov is the most EVIL customer service experience that I have encountered in 40 years of doing business. They shipped a defective product for which I had to pay an installation fee to no avail, and then refused to honor their 30-day money back guarantee citing that they inspect all their products; therefore, it is impossible for their product to be defective. They refused an RMA number, stalled, and then offered to give me a RMA IF I return the product within two days for a 25% restocking fee! IF I ship it by two day mail, which costs as much as the product. It took 10 days to receive their item in the first place. Two days to get it installed and then two days of calling for a RMA to no avail."

"When you call them, you can tell you are waking up Vitaliy from his midday nap. He sounds grumpy, unhelpful, and something just not good. According to the New York Secretary of State, the corporation in annulled.
This is not about the money, this is about PURE EVIL instent. You can read the Better Business Bureau complaints and their replies to get an idea of their evil nature. Call them by phone and you will see that doing business with evil is not worth the risks."

If I were 20 years younger I would probably do it. At that age I found these challenges interesting + cost effective, etc. Today I have no time to fool around with it. I'd rather pay a shop to do the job. Also, I've tried recording other noises made by the car and there is just too much background noise that needs editing/filtering which is again time consuming. It's just not worth it, but thank you for the idea and for taking the time to post it.

They have not replaced the shock absorber. Multiple mechanics at different locations seem to be 100% confident that there is nothing wrong with the suspension/shock absorber.

The GLC has had issue with strut noise. I would not be surprised if the noise in your car is not from the suspension. I think the techs are too lazy to look.

Really, struts aren't insanely expensive. Swap on a new set up front and see if it helps. Of all the potential suspension issues a strut is probably the easiest to remedy.

Try putting the wheel on a vibration device platform.

So, here's the rattle/flutter some mechanics can't hear and those who can can't find the source of it. It is driving me CRAZY!
I was driving at 20 km/h (12 mph) over cracks in the road while recording this audio with my cellphone. The recurring two loud bangs are the front and then the rear wheel hitting the cracks. The rattle in between is the noise I'm talking about. In this audio it almost sounds like a deep roar.
Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Do you hear this on your car?

https://instaud.io/1f8J

Right at the 1:21 mark there is a very clear rattle. The front tire didn't even hit the crack hard enough to make a bang, but the rattle is still there!
Any help is much appreciated!

My dealer just spent over 14 days with my car , it had a very annoying noise arising out of cold air.i don't understand why it took so long ! Every time I would talk to the guy he would say they are unable to reproduce the sound , I took a test drive with a tech and immediately he admitted to hearing it so they kept the car for another 4 days only to call and say they were unable to reproduce it .

I was so frustrated but I could see physically on the car that they did some sort of work , window parts were clearly new on the sills so they said they were going to do more tests ! I was almost in tears lol it's such an annoying noise to make things worse the shuttle driver seemed to suggest I buy a new car while smiling ! It's so hard not to get angry so hard not get bitter but I stuck it out cause honestly I do not wish to drive to a different dealer (they are far)

i finally have the car back , noise is gone but I'm worried it's not going to last just don't know why they can't do good work , what's going on with this warranty work ? Don't they get paid to do it , why are they so reluctant to do the right thing.

I wonder if it could be a shock absorber valve loose and "fluttering" as it is trying to dampen the motion

That is exactly what I suspect. Another possibility is some bushing at the top of the strut. It can't really be any piece of loose plastic in the engine bay as literally nothing can move on the car at such low speeds other than the wheels and the suspension.
Thanks for your reply and for taking the time to listen to the audio.

UPDATE: I asked the dealer if they could replace the strut and the upper strut mount in another attempt to fix the rattle and the dealer has offered to change them under warranty. Replacing those two parts has fixed the issue!

Yeah!
Hats off to the level of their customer service. They replaced the parts based solely on my request, without concrete evidence that the parts were actually faulty.
