How do you top off the windshield fluid?

I tried to top off the windshield fluid yesterday for the first time. After putting in nearly a gallon into the reservoir, it still didn't top off and a lot of the fluid are spilled/dripped onto the floor. What am I doing wrong? How much fluid does the reservoir hold? Is there a way to check the reservoir level? The reservoir is not visible and I couldn't find it in the owner's manual. Kind of embarrassing to ask these questions but I don't want to keep putting in fluid and have it spilled onto the floor.

Look under the hood above the rear left front fender----you will see an oblong flap to the 5 liter reservoir------how to fill, when you see fluid running out of the flap one would assume that its full.

What if fluid just keeps on disappearing after putting in 3 gallons? How is that possible?

The tank is down the back of the fender. If it's not filling and runs out, I'd assume it's broken somehow. Remove the rear half of the fender liner and look for what's broken. Or take it to the dealer if you're still under warranty, but if you ran over something and damaged it, that's on you and won't be covered. It holds a little more than a gallon but unless you spill it everywhere, you shouldn't see it all over the ground, it should just fill up.

That's exactly my point. No way of knowing if it's full or not. Dumb MB design.

No, when it isn't leaking, it will fill up right to the top.

I put the garden hose in there this morning just to see how much fluid it could take..I let it run for 2 minuets on full and it never filled up but nothing was leaking out the bottom either.. where can all this fluid be going? It’s like something from magic show?

Mine fills up easily and is no different than any other car I've ever owned. Takes just over a gallon before it tops off.

5 liters is still a pretty large tank. I don't think I have ever had a car that would take more than 3/4 of a gallon.

Most newer cars take a full gallon once the warning comes on, so when you get the washer fluid warning you can add a full gallon without keeping a half full bottle left over.

The cap will only show a little bit, the tank is way down on the bottom, so you won't see anything until it is full 100%. You can't hurt it by filling it, but unless you use it all the time, you have plenty left if you get the message to fill it at the next opportunity. It's not gonna be an emergency.
