Questions for 2016 C300 owners

Hello everyone, after lurking for a while, I finally decided to join the forum. I'm planning on buying a CPO 2016 C300 next month and after doing some research I wanted to ask those who own this model year what I should be worried about when buying one. What are the common issues to look out for? Is 2016 a good year to buy? What are some of the costs of maintenance? Is the 2016 reliable? Am I crazy for considering this one? Are there extended warranties available at the dealership and should I take them? What should I be worried about? Any helpful tips would be much appreciated!

I have a '15 which had the wrist pin problem. '16s don't have that problem. I would listen for rattles from dash, center console, headrests, sunglass holder area, etc. Make sure the lights work in the door handle area. These are somewhat minor issues and can be easily fixed at the right dealership. You're not crazy for considering this car, they are nice cars. You might be crazy to not get an extended warranty. You can shop around by calling other dealerships around the country. I live in NY but purchased my warranty from Jeff Jackson at Tafel Mercedes in Louisville. I paid just under 2k which covers my car from 2020-'22. Apparantly there was some state law and tax changes which raised the price since purchased back in March. JJackson@TafelMotors.com

As mentioned in another thread, I bought a 2016 C 300 CPO a little more than a month ago, and so far am enjoying it, no issues. It was off a 3 year lease, and had 17,000 miles on it. The original warranty is up in November of this year. The CPO deal adds 1 year, unlimited miles. I rolled an extension into the financing. It is 2 years, starting at the end of the CPO warranty, also unlimited miles. It cost $2495, and it is offered by Mercedes Benz. It came with a list of what it covers, which makes me think it might not be exactly the same as the original warranty. I guess that what will determine if it is a good warranty is if it covers me when I need it. One of its nice features is if I decide not to keep the car after the end of the CPO warranty, end of October, 2020, they refund the $2495, and if I do keep the car and use some of the extended warranty, there is a pro rated refund. I would like to think that I will keep this car for 4 years; only time will tell. Figuring out how to service this car is complicated, because of the low mileage. It has had an A service and a B service, and had essentially an A service before being offered as a CPO. I am eligible to buy a service contract that would cover the car for 3 services, presumably 2 A's and a B. This is $1400, and I have until the next service to buy it. I am inclined to do this if it covers the next B service, which is pricey. The question is, will they do two A's after the B? I will look at the numbers when the time comes. I'm sure the service department is a major money maker for Mercedes, because everything they do is pricey. If you look at what gets done, an A service is a glorified oil change, and in my previous GLA an A service was almost $400.

C300 is very good car. Check if it has review camera and keyless go. Not all cars have them. Review camera became standard from 2017 model. Check if it has either navigation or prewiring for Garmin map pilot. Most cars have it but not all.

The deal maker for me was that the car had LED head lights. What an amazing difference in night driving.

I’d suggest avoiding the ‘16 for the 7 speed transmission. I believe 17+ got the 8 speed. The somewhat raspy inline 4 mated with the spastic 7 speed kills a lot of the “luxury” vibe. The 8 is better at finding the right gear.

EDIT: It’s a 9 speed and ‘18 +.

Also, CPO is not Bumper To Bumper like the original warranty. That means any cosmetic stuff (broken trim pieces, leather wear through, and squeaks and rattles, are no longer covered. Get the dealer to address that stuff as a condition of the sale.

CPO is refundable to you prorata or transferable to a new (private) owner, so buy as much as they’ll sell you for as long a term as they’ll sell you. Unused CPO coverage is refundable. CPO is limited by time, not miles. The goal is to have the car covered for at least as long as you’re making payments. The “free” CPO runs 12 months after the factory warranty expires. You can add another 24 months.

As for my ‘16, my main gripe were all the rattles in the cabin, so I’d be listening for them and take a test drive on bumpy roads to see if they appear. My 16 has Airmatic and it helps both ride quality and rattles.
Good luck!

it was 18+ that got the 9 speed there was never an 8 speed

I stand corrected. But damn...it took them two more years to finally put the right tranny in the C300?
