Is there a definitive answer on Carplay yet?
For the W205, Ive seen threads about random chinese headunits and boxes with external microphones, but do we have a definitive go-to for carplay yet?

I have the aftermarket box by Limcet and it's been fine. Carlinkit makes another I believe. The boxes are more or less identical and install the same, it's just a matter of which seller you get it from. The best option, IMHO, is the android head unit since you get touchscreen with it.

Correct, you shouldn't be trying to type while driving. This is a given. However, it's miles better than attempting to enter an address on the benz clickwheel. Quite frankly that method isn't any safer since you're taking your eyes off the road. Just use google voice translation in that case and speak the address.

I would just buy the one from the guys at incarpassion.com. I can't find anything on ebay for some reason. Either way it's the same box just rebranded. It does work like OEM only you have to switch the display from NTG to carplay differently and it doesn't directly interface to the stock sound system. I just stream over bluetooth so it doesn't really matter to me. It's worth it to have waze since the stock COMAND and Garmin navigation are garbage.

The one they have says it supports wired connection if you scroll down, but you may want to email them to check.
So here's the con about the audio. You can connect it to the USB port via the aux to usb module, but I didn't want to do that since I like to listen to XM radio while I drive. So for me I connect the phone's audio to bluetooth for my navigation prompts (i.e. - google maps or waze) so I can listen to the radio, and if I want to play music or a podcast from my phone I just stream it over bluetooth, as opposed to using the aux-in module.

The first link is an OBD carplay activation tool. It will work if your car is carplay "ready" but you'll have to do some research with your VIN number to see. There's a thread in this forum with a database and instructions but I can't remember what it was titled. The second seems like it must be the same because it said it was only 200 pounds which is insanely cheap for a hardware upgrade.
