Dirty Fuel Tank
So i was driving one day and suddenly I got a check engine light. Later on I took it to my dealer and I was told that my fuel tank is dirty. They took it out cleaned it put it back on. Sadly the check engine came back. I felt the car is slower. So they advised that the cost of the tank plus its filter is 2k usd. My question did any of you guys had this problem. Is there anything I can do before a new fuel tank. Thanks for your help.

or if you have an OBD Scanner, best to check and post it out here so those who had the same codes before can advise further as well.
I'd be interested to know what codes are being presented also.
For your sake, I hope this is not the case, but it almost seems like they are just going to start replacing parts until it "fixes itself". I would request proof of component(s) failure before replacement myself. If they can't prove a failure, how can they be confident of their solution?
Hoping for the best for you man.

Dirty fuel damaged the low and high pressure fuel pumps. My dealer wanted me to buy a new tank and a new low pressure fuel pump which comes in the tank. Cost 2000 usd excluding labor. My brother suggested to see a mechanic to obtain a second opinion. So i took the car to a mechanic he basically said to take the fuel tank out clean it and replace the pressure pumps. Cost of 2 pumps + labor 800 usd. Low pressure pump oem high pressure fuel pump from Bosch. This is a saving of 1200 usd. Well actually more because the 2000 usd dealer's quote excludes labor and excludes the cost of the high pressure fuel pump. So I estimated a saving of 1800 usd. I was frankly not convinced that the whole fuel tank needs to be replaced. Dealers, as Keith rightly said, only fix things by replacing parts. In addition, the service advisor said that the low pressure fuel pump cannot be sold separate as it forms part of the whole fuel tank assembly. I found his statement as fishy and bizzard. In line with the above, I shook hands with this mechanic and he started the work. This is the first time my car is serviced outside the dealer's carage. So I was a little bit worried. Please note that in Lebanon there is only one exclusive MB dealer so its not like you can check another dealer to have another opinion. To come back to the subject the mechanic took the tank and explained that it was contaminated with bad fuel. So he cleaned it and he bought the oem low pressure fuel pump from the dealer and provided me the invoice. So my feelings were right regarding the fishy statement of the dealer's service advisor. The mechanic explained that the dealer don't have the high pressure fuel pump in stock so he recommended Bosch. I told him to go ahead and buy Bosch high pressure fuel pump. He replaced the fuel pumps and thoroughly clean my tank. He started the car، the check engine light disappeared. His total bill was 800 usd. Lesson learnt: don't trust dealers but always trust your brother 😁
