Does warranty transfer?

I bought a 2018 MB which was an executive car until 6900 miles, and then got sold/titled to the first owner in 2020. The third party dealer seller showed me the Carfax, which says warranty started in 2020 and will expire after 4 years /50k miles from then. I called a few different MB dealers, some confirm that's true, while others say that if I bought the car from a third party dealer, warranty is voided, but if I bought it from an individual, warranty is transferred. Does anyone know if I have warranty?

The vehicle is covered 4 years/50k miles from the inservice date, so you will be fine, take it into any MB dealership and they can see that on their computer, anything beyond that is just dealership games

Mercedes warranty transfers from the first owner to the next but only at the consent by MB. If the car is sold by a Private NON MB dealership, then the warranty will then become void as MB will not warrant a vehicle that has left their circle. However all MB comes with 4 years warranty automatically but will start at 2018 as per our car and END in 2022 and an extended warranty is only valid in MB circle.

I would have a Mercedes dealer confirm the warranty start date. I have a feeling the warranty started sooner than 2020. The new car warranty stays with the car. MBUSA can void the warranty if the car has missed regular servicing, so you might want to check that as well.

I called multiple dealers in the area. All said warranty started in 2020. One said warranty is voided when it’s sold by a third party.

It depends on the dealership. Some MB dealerships will honor the warranty even if you bought the car from a third party. Ultimately it works in their favor to do so as they bill MB for all the warranty work they do. This is ideal as MB will always pay no questions asked whereas you as the new owner might not or want to or try to negotiate the price down/ go somewhere else that will do the repairs for a cheaper price.

I speak as someone that went through the same thing back in 2020.

Dealers are not arbiters of the MBUSA warranty. MBUSA is. Having said that, there are circumstances where the warranty would not be honored. Primarily if the car is altered or the maintenance schedule has not been followed. I was working for BMW when a guy came in and he just purchased a used X3. He wanted to buy a BMW extended warranty(which BMW allows to subsequent owners, MB doesn't). The car had NEVER had any scheduled maintenance done. Warranty cancelled.

i should have a talk with my MB dealership about the extended warranty the sold me where I’m not the original owner. Granted the vehicle has been properly maintained and serviced by MB.

For those interested... I took the car to one of the dealers who did not claim warranty does not transfer if car is sold via third party. They serviced it no problem.

MB will sell you an ELW when you buy from them, I believe if you buy from the original owner privately you are also eligible for the ELW. Where it can get tricky is when you buy from a non-MB dealer, most will say it can't be done, but one or two can make it happen

Another update... dealer called me a few days after I picked up my car asking if I knew who the previous owner (whatever his name was). I said no that name does not ring a bell. Then the service advisor told me that warranty is only valid for the previous owner and that I do not have warranty going forward. But the otherwise the transfer box replacement and service (likely over $6k?) was free.

As I was saying....
Looks like the dealer didn't do their homework and had to eat the cost of the repair.

Correct. I'm glad the service advisor owned up to his mistake, even though he was as unprofessional as it gets in every other respect. He did tell me when I dropped off the car I am covered until end of 2023. But throughout this ~10 day wait he gave me zero updates unless I called and left vm to inquire, and he would not return my call until after I called multiple times. Also he calls me "buddy" all the time . Thanks buddy for the free warranty claim.
