i am wondering how replacing the map sensor helps? mainly because it is just an electrical device that measures pressure...not saying it doesn't help, just wondering how...

This appears to be a common failure item in these cars and leads to intermittent power issues - supposedly - again I'm filtering anecdot, information from their SA, probably some people mixing up MAF with MAP, etc... In any case, anecdotally, for C32s, replacing them _seems_ to help many people.

I'm asking because I feel like I have intermittent power issues, but my dealer disagrees. To me it's VERY obvious. Sometimes it's just a monster. It's actually enough to satisfy me (for now ) and I can really FEEEEEEL the power. It's FAST-FAST-FAST - but about 75% of the time it's like I'm in my wife's 320 wagon. This is all from a dig, so I don't feel like it's about shift-points or anything. I'm on it all day and most of the time it's bogging, but sometimes it just screams through the gears.

If it's $350...why not do it? Having a new one can't cause any problems can it?

edit: oh yeah, forgot to say, I don't have a direct answer for your actual question, but (probably wrong) inference is that it's incorrectly showing 'enough' boost and bleeding off what it thinks is excess. *shrug* total-not-a-mechanic-guess, but maybe something along those lines.

I read about your bigger flow pump from a Ford truck I think it was. I dig it. That's all good, and a cool and relatively-easy sounding mod which I'll probably do once my warranty is up, but currently mine APPEARS to be running - I've done the 'check for the sound' test and I can hear it up there when I turn the car off for about 20-30 secs or so. I'm wondering if it's running intermittently, but it seems like if it was going to fail, it's an all or nothing proposition.

i would say it sounds like it is working, but i agree that you should probably swap it out when your warranty is out just for the peace of mind...

Along these lines, one of the local tuners (yes of the generally japanese, mad tite, jdm, import tuners yo) said that he could fabricate a FMIC without much trouble and that he does it all the time for guys that strapping turbos onto these japanese imports that have no business with a turbo on it (Honda Accord, Hyundai Elantra, et al.) - I'm generally nervous about this kind of thing, but the intercooler and piping seem like fairly straight-forward plumbing affairs.

the only problem is that a FMIC would do absolutely nothing for our car, it has to be after the 'charger...obviously he does not understand enough about FI to comprehend this concept or he is just trying to take your money....i would stay away from him

Well this is by way of another party who said 'Chuck can fabricate an intercooler for you, no need to buy a big expensive one from those Krauts' when I talked about buying a Vath inter-cooler for lots of money that was bigger for our cars.

Don't we have a FMIC?...I thought we had a FMIC right in front of our radiator? Wouldn't making a bigger one have a positive effect? Believe me, it's me who doesn't understand enough as I translate from what I say, then to what someone tells me, then to how I understand it and type it here but I take your caution on trusting mechanics to heart.

I was of the understanding that a FMIC was just a radiator basically, that ran water through channels (hot air in, cool air out) and then to cooling channels in the supercharger itself and that we have one in our C32s?...

ok, i see where the disconnect is...

what we have in front of the radiator is a heat exhanger/radiator...it functions just like a radiator, but runs seperate water/coolant through it in order to cool the intercooler that is located under the supercharger....we have a water/air intercooler, not an air/air intercooler like turbochargers use.

if he can make bigger heat exchanger to fit our cars, then i would be interested...at some point this summer i am going to pull the bumper off so i can see how much room there actually is behind the bumper to mount a bigger heat exchanger...i have a feeling there is not going to be very much extra room, but i hope i am wrong...

let me know if he can come up with something...

I love it when I get that missing piece of information. Many thanks for that, clears up a lot of other conversations that I was mis-understanding.

So we don't have a FMIC we just have a FM radiator exclusive to our intercooler which is located back at the s/c.

I'll be posting here all spring/summer/fall as I do things to my car - and also checking what my guys are telling me, with you guys, so if I get something fabbed, you'll be in the loop.
