Question LET HE?: WHAT DO I FILL WITH? WHAT IS THE BEST COMBO?

I just installed my LET heat exchanger and didnt know what coolant would be best for cooling the engine and protecting it. Right now I have just the Peak brand 50/50 coolant that does not require adding water, then I added a bottle of water-wetter just for some extra cooling (if it even works). I searched and found a bunch of different answers saying to just put like two bottles of water-wetter in and fill the rest with distilled water, other posts said put 15% Antifreeze and the rest distilled water, then some others just said use MB coolant with 50/50 water. What is best used for getting the best performance(cooling) and the best protection for parts and boiling/freezing? Is there a best combo to use, or is it all going to be about the same? Also, if anyone has had good experiences with any specific products that help keep things cooler, please list them.
Thanks in advance to everyone,
Bobby C.

Personally, I used the MB brand coolant (bought from dealer's parts dept) and distilled water in roughly a 50/50 ratio. The more water you use, the more physical cooling capability you add... but the tradeoff is less boiling/freezing protection. We're not talking major differences here, however... which is why I stuck with 50/50. If you live in an area that never experiences freezing temps, you can get by with only using distilled water (and throwing in a bottle of water wetter) to try to maximize your cooling system's efficacy. Personally, I don't think I'd go lower than 20-25% MB coolant, though, for peace of mind.

Generally speaking, it is not advised to use the aftermarket coolants in our cars (i.e. Peak, Prestone, etc.) - IIRC, it has something to do with the chemical composition of the MB specific stuff being matched to our cooling systems; the others are generic. Perhaps some other forum members can speak to this specific issue more directly...

+1

Water is virtually unsurpassed at absorbing and dissipating heat. A shortcoming is its distinct lack of corrosion inhibitors. If freezing temperatures are a part of your annual routine, an appropriate percentage of Ethylene/Propylene Glycol is obviously essential to avoid expansion failure.

The aluminum intercooler core has been proven to be particularly prone to failure from corrosion-induced leakage. Because OE and aftermarket replacements are not inexpensive, it’s false economy to attempt chemically-induced improvements to heat dissipation through the cooling medium, imho.

sounds like airplane
if you had none of the limitations of the stock system what combination of chemicals/water would you use?

My air-water set-up doesn't encompass anything stock

sorry, for hijack

i say go with 50/50 with mb coolant and distilled water. Usually oem spec is the best compromise between daily driving, reliability and performance.

would a bottle of water-wetter (or something like that) and a little MB antifreeze with the rest distilled water work better for cooling things down, cause it has more water which helps better for cooling and it would also have the MB antifreeze and water-wetter to help for protection?
So in short, about 15% MB antifreeze+a bottle of water-wetter and 85% distilled water? Or maybe a little different like 20/80 or 25/75? I want the most cooling i can have that will also protect the engine. Right now with my PEAK 50/50 coolant (do not add water kind) I do not notice much of a difference between the original HE and my new LET HE?
Can someone PLEASE HELP me out on some options or different products or something that will make my bigger HE work a little better?

unless you drag or autox your car a lot, i think stock mixture should be fine. if your in more of a hotter climate you can probably go more water and less coolant. But i would definately get rid of the peak stuff and use mb coolant.

Do not mix the Peak with your coolant! The other brand names are not generic, they are made with different chemicals and can not be mixed together, otherwise a "jelling" will occur and various other corrosion issues. One of the only local brands of coolant around here that is chemically compatible with MB, is Xerex Gold G-05. I live around central AZ and freezing temps are rare here. I recently chemically flushed my coolant at 70K. I used 2 treatments totaling 4 hours of treatment and flushing, also using distilled water throughout the proses. It took 12 gallons worth of flushing before it came out clean. I used distilled water and Water Wetter to finish with.
My results ended with an average 10 degrees less in coolant temp.

Yes water wetter works, and you could use it as you described. However, your new LARGE HE will more than make up for it. I have used Water wetter in my race car, and it DID drop the temps, but for a street car, save you money. You will not see the difference and I personaly would want the protection from having MORE anitfreeze.

Oh yeah, I use the MB anit freeze and distilled water in mine. 40/60 mix.

See yeah
