If you really want to be socially conscious, keep the AMG, just walk more places and get a bike for longer distances. Plus try using less gas/elec at home by conserving/weather stripping/etc. and you'll far outweigh any carbon savings from getting a car that does 10 MPG more (and you'll save cash).
Remember, the amount of BTU's to produce a new car are really high and those have to come from burning something too!

Seeing as its back from the dead. When my family lived in England, we had 2 Passat TDI station wagons. The first one was a '93, sounded like a panzer tank (you could literally hear it from a block away) went 0-60 in about a month and a half, and got about 40mpg.
The second was an '04, had boatloads of torque, was actually fun to drive, incredibly well built, not significantly louder than a gasoline engine and got 55mpg.
The only difference is in England you can get diesel at every gas station and the car was similarly priced to its diesel counterpart. Here it is a hassle to get it in a lot of places, and the demand doesn't seem to be there for them. Maybe in a few years.
