C32 AMG - 55 Kompressor engine swap

Hey guys, just wanted to share my experience of this insanity.

It all started in the end of 2014. I was on the hunt for a fast and practical daily driver and ended up with a C32 wagon.
The day after the purchase the gearbox broke down, luckily it was replaced on the dealers warranty.
Three months later the engine gave up. Pretty good start huh?

But no time to cry. The day after the engine failure a W211 E55 with burnt out interior showed up on a local ad page. "It cant be that hard right?" I bought it right away.

The mechanical swap was almost too easy, we did all of it in one day. I had to make a few cuts in the chassis to get the engine in, nothing major though. Most of the stuff bolted right in, some of it had to be modified and a few things had to be custom made.

Then the ECU, I tried a few things that didn't work. So I was left with just one option, send it to Rudy Compart. He did the magic in the ECU and helped me with remote programming in DAS. He really knows what he's doing and he deserves tonnes of cred for this!

My vacation couldn't have started better right?

My hat is off to you sir, damn it looks like it barely fits.
The time lapse was very enjoyable to watch.. that M113K is a behemoth compared to the M112K.

ps: how did the engine in your C32 get destroyed?

what did your insurance company say about you changing engine from a 6-banger to a v8?
did your insurance rates go up?

did you do the engine swap with your mechanic buddies, or did you have to hire some expertise to help you out?

have fun burning tires

Yeah, it looks tight because it is! I have 2½" between the radiator and the supercharger belt. To get the engine cover on I had to grind off the radiator tie bar, and with it on the hood didn't close so I had to remove some reinforcements.

It was at the rev limiter at a longer pull. I could not find anything else wrong so it must have been just a piston failure. 120k miles, 10k with pulley and tune.

We also found three piston parts in the exhaust.

It's very straight forward as most of the C32 stuff bolts right on.
Gearbox output flange, gearbox oil cooling lines, fuel line, brake booster hose, AC lines, power steering lines etc. Some of it had to get a small beating to fit though.

The right exhaust manifold is a mix of C32 and E55, left was bolt on.

Cooling hoses are custom made. I used the C32 thermostat housing installed up side down.

Oil cooling were trickier. I'm using stock E55 radiator in front of the right tire and stock lines. When the time is right I will make new lines to get more clearance.

Wiring was pretty easy, the ECU connectors matches so you will only have to change the connectors named M17, M18 and X26. A couple of resistors had to be used to simulate the second fuel pump relay etc.

E55 tranny and stock C32 rear end. I really need an LSD and some heavier gearing wouldn't hurt, so we'll see what happens.

your car is helbilsgodkänd in EU, is it allowed to fiddle with another engine?

doing such mod is very cool, did you have to registrera om as an ombyggt fordon?
what did Besiktningen have to say about this?

Who is Rudy Compart, is he located in Schweden?

have fun bränna däck on tarmac
The helbilsgodkännande doesn't allow modify almost anything, but those rules don't really apply in real life.

The försäkringsbolag and bilprovningen are happily unaware of this. It would not be possible to register it as an ombyggt fordon as it's too powerful.

Yep, we did it by ourselves.

Rudy is located in the states. He has done and been involved in lots of MB/Crossfire engine swaps.

Thanks for all the comments!

Amazing swap, congratulations! Did you use an E55 fuel pump or walbro/other?

So you used the E55 ECU and coded it to the car so the canbus etc works? Does traction control work? Did you change the wiring harness? Obviously you used the E55 TCU also?

For better traction and cruising speed you can use a differential from C270CDI and use all stock E55 TCU since the 270CDI is 2.65 like E55.
You will benefit of the M mode and lack of torque limiters. (if y0u use C32 TCU)
But i guess you know all this stuff since the work you managet to do

looks like you bought yourself a strong donor engine!
did you manage to hit flat out 300KM/H this summer?

how does your onboard computer (färddator) respond to the new engine, do you get any weird info in display?

Almost a year and 10k miles have past since the swap, it's been my daily beater since day one and it holds up really good.

Lots of things have happened, but I'd like to share this 82 mm throttle body install.

No adapter plate, no welding, no nothing. It was almost too easy! The throttle body is from a M273 E500/E550. Milled holes in the TB to match stock bolt pattern, ported inlet and modified stock gasket.

hi
do you have rudy compact email or contact number? i installed a C32 supercharger on my E320 and running strong till now. im thinking to swap my engine to E55 engine like yours. probably i need to talk to him to make sure everything will work as it should.
do you use your stock ECU or E55 ECU? what about the engine moutning on the crossmember? does the engine bolt on to the old crossmember?
i believe the wiring harness that goes from the chassis to the ECU would be the same, and i can use the E55 engine harness from the ECU to the engine. please correct me if im wrong.

I have a W209 CLK500 (M113 5.0L) with the 7-speed 722.9. How hard would this swap be for my car? I love the W209 chassis. I believe the 722.6 5-speed must be swapped as well.

Should be much easier than the c32 since the w209 already fits a v8. Should be more or less the same as going from a clk55. Yes you will need the 5 speed tcu and loom too. I am not sure how the differential will take it but you may need the strength and ratio from a clk55 diff.
