Need help with immobilizer (2005 C55)

I just got the iCarsoft MBII and after looking through everything found this fault (picture).

For reference, the key is in the ignition and able to go all the way to the starting position, but nothing is happening (no clicks or any noise from starter). Also, nothing is showing up on the instrument cluster as to what the transmission is doing and I can't take it out of park. Also, and I don't have a picture of it, but the transmission control module is showing a fault of "unable to communicate with CAN" or something similar. Are all of these issues related or is this an individual parts replacement nightmare?

Please help me out, the car has been parked for going on two months now.

Damian

Any symptoms leading up these faults? Or any change of parts before these faults occurred? Sorry to hear the car has been down for long, I'm sure with the help of the forum and others you'll be able to get it squared away, hopefully as efficiently as possible.

A few days ago, I drove my car all day and all of a sudden it would not shift out of first gear, the display would just show it in drive and all the gauges (except the MFD) were frozen. I was in a hurry so I dropped the car off at home and took my truck to finish my day.

Also when I parked the car the transmission kept showing as it was in drive. I noticed this because when I put the parking brake on, I got the warning about it being on even though the the actual transmission was in park.

When I get back home, the car would not start but the MFD would work - I could even get into the additional display for dyno mode. Also, I could not move the shifter from park. No messages and no light on the dash for ABS, ESP, etc.

This morning, the car started fine, was able to go into reverse, then drive. I drove it for a minute but then it reverted to the same thing. Pretty quickly, as in before I left my block from my driveway - but it did shift into 2nd gear momentarily.

I have checked battery voltage and it displays good voltage - even when it started it did not drop under 11v and when running it shows the 14.4-14.2v like normal. All fuses related to start up have been checked.

I have been searching through this forum, including the W203 forum and Google but nothing has helped yet.

Any ideas?

Damian

From what your describing about the transmission behavior, instincts would lean me towards the transmission conductor plate. However, some of the other symptoms described were not experienced for me when my tcp went out, such as the parking brake warning and no dash lights (mine all lit up sporadically).

Have you serviced the transmission previously?

Only fluid/filter changes per normal maintenance. I never bought the "lifetime" fluid crap from MB. This weekend I plan to take a look the TCM, wiring, and connectors. However, do you (or anyone else) know if this kind of transmission fault will keep the immobilizer engaged?

The immobilizer is something I am unfamiliar with or it’s relation the the conductor plate.

Hopefully someone else can chime in...?

So I took a look at the TCU, and I have oil all over the cables and a very thin amount on the TCU itself. Is this what the conductor plate service is supposed to rectify?

Attached is a photo of the TCU after I had wiped it down a bit. But you can see the staining of the oil on it if you look closely. Even after giving it the wipe down and using electrical contact cleaner, still the same symptoms.

If oil has crept to the TCU that means the transmission conductor plug was leaking for a long time.

If the TCU was damaged by the oil you may need a new TCU. The conductor plate is possibly still okay but may require replacement also.

you can try opening up the TCU and cleaning it up with an electrical cleaner and checking the soldering connections. Then re test.

if you do need a new TCU make absolute sure the replacement unit has the same part # as your unit or it won’t work. You may need STAR to resync after installing, not entirely sure...

good luck, this is a common enough issue that will have documentation among forum and internet, so you should be able to find some helpful info.

I've always heard about the transmission plug leaking ATF into the computer but never heard what symptoms it causes. This thread could actually be very useful to somebody trying to troubleshoot the same thing.

So I did replace the conductor plate, connector plug and replaced with a same part number TCM and I am still experiencing the same symptoms. Immobilizer is still activated and the TCM is still showing bad information when I look at the data values. As an example, with the vehicle stationary and not running the data value for engine speed is 749 rpm with transmission output shaft speed at 7459 rpm. It is even saying the wheel speed is 179 mph!

Also, I am getting a P2300 code from the TCM and it says "CAN communication not possible with other systems..." Because of that code, I have taken a close look at all of the cables coming out of the TCM (both to the transmission and in the interior cable trays) and do not see any damage on any of the sheathing and/or connectors. I am sore as hell from all the work I did yesterday and a large portion of my interior is out of the car when I was trying to trace out the cables.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do next besides turning it over to a shop and/or dealer?

I would take a look at wheel speed sensors, you can test them using a multimeter. Tbh anytime you are dealing with something like this after you've tried what you have with no luck yet, I would recommend finding someone with STAR to scan the car. It may save you time and money at this point.

Good luck to you, sorry I am not able to help any more than that. More people should chime in on this one, I'm sure somebody knows the solution...

You may need to have the system reprogrammed as well since you have switched the TCM...?
