^ My fears exactly. Such a great price but man, I really love getting in my car every day and not seeing an engine light beaming back into my eyes.

Injectors fuel pump ecu and so on... might be more headaches than it worth.

Right- sounds like a 5.4l next tax refund check is calling my name. :y

it's not even a good deal- I paid less for a kit in much better shape like 4 years ago.
I'd pay 1500 max for that these days |
Silence, can you elaborate on what else you needed to do/get to make the kit run half decently? I'm particularly keen to know what HPS' fuel management strategy might be, and if you had to muck around with that.
BTW, MINIs are fun. I had an '02 with JCW package. Thank goodness the previous owner shelled out for the JCW. Spark plugs service is expensive - C$65 per plug! The only thing I would have wanted more on that car was an LSD, and larger washer fluid reservoirs. |
Feel free to pm/email me to discuss it more.
In short- I run a big fuel pump and lots of fuel pressure. The kit in stock form overworked my stock pump pretty bad (and no one seems to be able to properly tune the duty cycle of the injectors on our cars either). Stock injectors are fine. I scale the signal from the MAF in order to trick the ECU into thinking things are ok with higher than normal air flow numbers. I do that with a split second unit. It's all 15-20 year old tech, but it works. I do enjoy our mini. I've gotten so into bike racing that I don't spend as much time with the cars as I'd like to. Plus the girlfriend is getting on me to spend a bunch of money on some nicer suv than my beaten old Tahoe. I don't even drive most days, seems a waste. |

I found that most people who had trouble with the Gen1 were installing on the larger 5.5L motor. Had it not been sold or attempted on the 5.5L I bet it wouldn't have had the headaches. That and I notice the only people that consistanly knock the Gen1 have never owned one:nix: Larger fuel pump, supplied MAF clamp, a few misc hoses and clamps is all to get it running as intended. Any of the S/C kits your going to have to deal with either, f.pumps, injectors, tunining, A/F issues, etc...one the first complaints that enters my head is cooling and the orientation of the kit.
I sold my kit for $2000 shipped with a ported/polished/rebuilt blower and a few extras. $1500-$2000 is probably ok, you could run high 12's if set up properly, my best was 13.1et, 112mph trap, 2.4 60' lol..... The GenII is another story....I have found 5.5's for 2.5K area so I would go that route, they were much more money and less available when I bought my S/C kit. |
