2000 C43 shifter on 98 C43!!
Is it possible to use 2000 C43 shifter on 98 C43?? if it does would it make that auto/manual work as it should??
Anyone knows about this??? I found this in ebay :) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...item5639f3ac5a |
I doubt it will work as the 2000 model (last year production) was a Tiptronic type box, so probably very different from the standard 43 box..
|
It really should just be a matter of electronics. The mechanical components are the same, so you would need that assembly as well as a TCU programmed to match a 2000 MY C43.
|
I was going to do this mod last summer until I realized that the instrument cluster must be changed also ( you need it to display what gear you are in ) so I decided not to.

Oh, yea I didn't even think about the cluster!! this mod seemed reasonably easy but I guess it would cost at least $1k to do so...

I believe it might have some fading pixels, but I've never personally used it. There is a company that fixes the pixel issue, and you can save a lot of money :y |
So let me get this straight...all you need to do is change the TCU and shifter assembly and I could have triptronic?? which would also mean hardwired paddle shifters? Because that is the one thing that could change the attitude of the car :naughty:

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. I wonder if you could get that stuff out of a wrecked non-AMG MY2000 C class.

I know for a fact the wiring is completely different. You would have to build a wiring harness for the shifter. The 98 shifter is basically a voltage coded switch that sends different voltages to the trans module to let it know where the selector lever is in. The 2000 shifter is on the CAN network.

this is correct as far as the stock 98-99 C43 shifter, I have taken it apart. I posted pictures of it in another thread. As far as the 2000 model I have no clue... |
I think this is one of those "a bridge too far" mods. It's a great idea but it's gunna cost way more than it's worth in the end.

Mistake sorry

Yes, the automatic 722.6 can't even shift fast enough to even justify using it. Even much later models.
I drove a 2006 CLS500 today with paddle shifters and the tiptronic and it was painfully, abysmally, hilariously slow. It's easier and faster to manually select the gear in my 99 C43 (and it's still too slow shifting to bother). Don't bother with transmission upgrades unless you're fitting a manual, now that the mystery has been solved. |

I read somewhere or saw a video that some guy said he was going to install a tremec to his Mercedes. Can't remember if he said he was using the original engine or LS. He mentioned something about having a custom housing built so it would fit. Wonder if some European model might have a beefy manual transmission that would fit in our cars. |

with smaller adjustments, an adapter and sum tweaks you could fit a manual to your C43 |
