Headliner sagging- did MB ever make black sun visors for w202

My headliner just where the sunroof is sagging badly. Dealer wants $600 for the piece.
My independednt shop can do it for much cheaper but eh material won't be OEM and might not match perfectly.
Other option is to do the whole thing in black. But then i have grey sunvisors, gran handles, and vents in the sunroof.

Did MB make those parts in black on a w202 or another car that will swap over if I decide to go with a black suede headliner for example?

Hi,

If you talking about the cloth on the sliding panel on the sunroof, I thought about repairing mine with glue. But I thought it would be incorrect.

Thanks for opening the subject about it, I was about to create one. My rear roof is sagging too.

Paying 600$ for the whole cover seems to steep.

Mine is going to the upholstery shop in a couple weeks for the same things. The headliner started to sag off the moonroof shade about 2 weeks ago and then a couple days later I noticed a sag toward the rear of the vehicle. I was going to do the all black roof w/ OEM material but I had the same question about the visors. I'm just going to redo it in the same material with the strip on the sides. I'll snap some pics before and after to share.

MB will not be able to match the original material nor color, they'd probably just use the current stuff which is a downgrade. You won't be able to switch out those pieces to black however there are a number of paints you might use to change the color. I'd steer away from that route and just have the headliner and everything else done in a similar alcantara color or pattern. I wonder if threw make something special for us like AMG logos. http://www.alcantara.com/en/index.do

The M-B parts are exactly as original. I just bought both from M-B two months ago after a the local shops came to virtually the same price if I wanted the black along the edges. Since they could not match the material on the A, B and C pillars they would have to recover them also with the same material they would use on the edges and all the little add ons brought the price up.

And the sun visors did not come in black.

Pictures please?

Good stuff. Please keep us updated with your progress. Interested to know how and what shops to do that...

DIY!

Wrapped my headliner in black suede about a year ago, took about a day with drying times. Theres a couple guides if you search for them. It really was not bad at all. Got the material off eBay for a good price and then glue off amazon.

I also used a black vinyl spray paint that I got from auto zone and that was amazing! I suggest that if that is all you need to do. I can post pics later if you would like

I thought all Mercedes had light grey headliners and pillar covers... I thought they started that. It gives a closed car (non-convertible) the "feeling" of being larger than it looks. Mercedes are full of mind-****s lol

Dude I did mine and came out awesome. I have 2 Tone Grey / Black Leather Interior and when I redid the headliner, I went with all black and delete the sun roof liner panel. I think it looks awesome. 2 tone exterior and 2 tone interior.

maxbhp 01-21-2015 12:39 AM

For those with the two tone interior the full black suede option works well because the contrasting grey sunvisors blend in well.
For us with full black interior, I feel they stand out too much.

I really just want to repair the center sunroof part but finding material for it to match is touch.

Tony_AMG 01-21-2015 01:04 AM

The material used from it is vinyl on the headliner / center piece,

This. Vinyl with a separate foam backing so it's more of a pita to do properly (just more steps) and thus costs more to repair/replace than the more affordable foam backed fabric.

Here you go as far as a source:

An excellent source for material and, more important, advice. It was actually after speaking with them that I learned how difficult it is to truly duplicate the original. Their suggestion is to NOT use vinyl, even though they sell the material. Why? Because glueing the vinyl to the separate foam backing is very hit and miss. They advise using a foam backed cloth and laminating Alcantara on the sides and pillars. In the end it was going to cost about what I paid for the factory items.

Did you buy the factory headliner through them or through the dealer? They supposedly have the full assembly for between $500 and $600.

mickey13 01-22-2015 06:10 AM

Just do it all in Alcantara, it's a thick luxury material that looks great definite improvement over the vinyl. The grey is a very close match to the oem visor and sunroof hardware. Some guy posted a DIY around here but I think he suggested just getting it done somewhere. This will be the route I go when I have my interior done over.

I bought it through the dealer. I do get a substantial discount on parts though so the dealer is usually competitive with other sources.

Alex33 01-23-2015 09:02 PM

I just priced everything through the dealer and it's not as bad as I initially expected. The sunroof shade is $640 (a bit steep imo) and the entire headliner is $685. Those are list prices so if anyone has a hook up it will be much cheaper. Just thought I'd share the info I found. Now I'm considering getting the OEM headliner and shade :)

mickey13 01-24-2015 06:32 AM

Is anyone interested in doing a group buy from alcantara? They seem open to my initial contact, maybe we can even have special amg print done up.

Talk with the parts guys at the local dealer and see if they can cut you a discount. You can try the dealer in the link below, but the problem is going to be the shipping cost. The main headliner comes in an immense box which drives the shipping sky high.

Another option is to call Pelican Parts - even though they don't show it on their site they can oder anything.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/Mercedes-Benz/index-SC.htm

By the way, when I was working with Headliner Express I seem to remember the cost of Alcantara at $160 per yard with 7 yards required to do the headliner, sunroof panel and pillars. He pointed out that all the upholstery materials have a "grain" or "nap" that must be oriented longitudinally, so while it might seem to save material by going laterally, it doesn't come out right if you do so.

maxbhp 01-24-2015 06:00 PM

I would like to get an oem sunroof panel section and would be in for a group buy. The rest of my headliner is actually ok (for now).

Btw, what are the parts numbers for these? I have a friend at a dealer who might be able to help as well.

Why not find one from a Wrecked W202?, As far as Im aware 98 to 2000 W202's all had the same ones.

vinceC 01-24-2015 09:05 PM

Sunroof Panel - 202 780 02 40
Headliner - 202 690 19 50

I took these numbers from the EPC for my C43, which has the black/gray two tone interior. I can confirm these numbers from my receipt next week (I don't have access to it right now).

Used parts may be an option although how long they will continue to hold up is unknown.

vinceC 01-26-2015 12:55 PM

Correction. I found my notes from my conversations with Headliner Express. Their price for real Alcantara is $120 per yard, not $160. There are some other, cheaper synthetic "suede" options but I didn't see any that looked very good when I checked with the local shops.
