Leaking oil from oil filter?

just changed the oil 2 weeks ago and noticed it's leaking from the top of the oil filter cap? Looks like it's sweating. I tightened it when I changed the filter but not sure what's going on? Anyone have this issue?
Filter was Mercedes oem.
here are some pics

filter housing leak? Need assistance

Looks like it's the filter housing. I haven't even driven the car since I changed the oil. All I've done is start it up and let the oil cycle with a couple of revs here and there.
Could it be those 2 gaskets on the piece that's connected to the housing?
Or could it be I didn't tighten the cap properly even though it was snug. Cap gasket?
im desperate guys.

Did you replace the o rings when you put the new filter in?

peppyhead 02-11-2017 04:19 PM

Yep I used a bosch oil filter that came with all the gaskets and I replaced them when I installed it.

i don't think this is serious but it's annoying.

is there a gasket in the housing cap where the filter goes?

Sometimes they get old and brittle and if they get over torqued they will Crack around where they seal. Get a new cap assembly.

Looks like a serious looking puddle under the bumper  Needs checking for sure.

W202AMG 02-12-2017 06:34 AM

Are you sure its not coming from between the filter housing and the cooler?

PJmak 02-12-2017 11:58 AM

Pull it out and double check the o rings.

Never seen it leak from there.

W202AMG 02-12-2017 12:02 PM

Only the top o-ring should matter at all for leaks, but that wont put oil on the top, and it wont leak there with no oil pressure.

peppyhead 02-12-2017 12:51 PM

It's be top o ring gasket, as soon as there is pressure it spits that top gasket out and oil comes out the top.

mot the oil cooler thank god

mayne it's not tight enough? 25 nm pressure which is about 15lbs

peppyhead 02-12-2017 01:13 PM

Fixed it. Well if you can believe it wasn't tight enough.

i guess I'm not that strong.

It sealed now. Man these cars are finicky!

Rocman8 02-12-2017 03:05 PM

That's odd. If you have a proper o ring then it shouldn't leak even if it's just hand tight.

DRBC43AMG 02-12-2017 05:00 PM

It must have been very light hand tight. Glad to hear that it's fixed :)

Use a torque wrench with the big oil filter socket. Says 25nm on the top for a good reason ;)

PJmak 02-13-2017 01:09 PM

I always tighten mine by hand its never leaked.

Have you double checked the top o ring anyway just to make sure?

peppyhead 02-13-2017 01:12 PM

So what happened was when I changed it a couple of weeks back I changed all three gaskets that come with the filter but I didn't see a gasket that was left on there from before. Funny I actually removed 3 so the previous owner actually had 4 on there and this one was preventing the cap from seating properly on the filter housing, thus leaking and spitting oil out everytime there was oil pressure.
And you're right, hand tight is all you need. EVerything is all good. I am just glad it wasn't the oil cooler or somthing a bit more serious.

W202AMG 02-13-2017 04:57 PM

Arrr, no, hand tight it NOT all you need, 25nm is what Mercedes Benz specify, and 25nm is what you need.

Just because it doesnt leak does not mean it is done up properly. Why even chance it?

It always makes me laugh when people ignore torque specs like they know better, and they always wonder why when they have un-explained issues.

If you blokes think youre smarter than the manufacturers, go right ahead ;)

PJmak 02-13-2017 06:21 PM

If its plastic, I tighten by hand :D

Hence why they put the 25nm torque spec on it ;)

KJI3jflarryfe93 02-14-2017 08:57 AM

there is spezial tool for oil filter cap, it's shud be torqed with the tool, not with the hand you're using to wank with :rolf:

My first thought was a crack or cross thread.

Never hurts to be over cautious with aging service parts.

Cheers

Well i tend to agree with that last bit there, ive replaced almost everything on my C43, and almost everything was fine before. It all lasted 18 years without issues, so it might go another 18 without another cent spent. If nothing else, ive got a pile of good spares sitting here if i need them ;)
