W202 engine swap, is it worth it?

Hi I own a W202 1999,, C240. I have many issues but first can i replace the V6 engine with a mercedes V8? What issues can i expect? Which model or motor would you recommend?

The current V6 smokes like a professional and the ECU kept going into limp mode. The battery went flat while the key was stuck in the ignition, need to recode the key now...

Any suggestions or advise would be appreciated.

I think that you would end up spending significantly more trying to get a V8 into it than if you just walked away from it and bought a C43. You'd need the engine, wiring harness, exhaust manifolds, intake, sensors, ECU, etc. The transmission would likely bolt up but be underrated for the torque and power of the V8. There have been some V8 swaps in the SLK's and Crossfires, so those forums may be more useful in gathering info.

You may be able to swap in the V6 from the C280 with minimal fuss and get a 25 hp bump, but the V8 would be far more challenging and costly.

Its just not worth it unles you do absolutely everything your self....even then.

Depending where you are, you could get a best up c43 for less and it woulf still be a better investment.

would you know the engine number? I would probably need the ECU aswell? What about the gearbox? Have you done this engine swap? I heard i could do a swap with the 300d. Any feelings regarding the diesel swap?

There's too much additional bolstering that would need to be done for your car to be able to safely handle the horsepower increase and extra engine weight that would go with putting a bigger V-8 engine in your car. Your car is an AMG with a hand built engine so removing that engine will significantly lower the value of your car. I would instead suggest that you might be better off diagnosing your current engine to see if it really is beyond repair or if it might be salvageable with some work. It might look worse than it is. There might be rubber hoses and or gaskets that are leaking and that just might be causing the smoking. Your ECU might be receiving bad information from other parts of the car and that might be causing it to not work properly. It'll be unknown until the engine is given a thorough inspection. I do think an AMG is worth trying to save. You also might consider selling it as is to someone with experience in working on such a car who would be able to do the work needed to get it back in good running order. Hope this helps you.

His current car is a C240, not an AMG.

You're correct. Sorry for the misread. I saw AMG and didn't stop to consider that that didn't mean the hand built engine for this particular car. I read it too fast. Oops and sorry. In that case maybe an engine swap wouldn't be such a bad idea but the extra weight and power of a V-8 will require additional upgrades to transmission suspension, etc which might not make it so cost effective.

As others have said, I would also recommend you looking for a real C43 and not convert a non-AMG member of the w202 family. Yes it can be done if you are handy with tools, but it could be ending up more expensive than finding a real c43. Not forgetting it will never be a real AMG with the identifying chassis # etc..

I was going to supply the OP with a list of well priced C43's for sale, but I was surprised to find very few for sale and the ones that are for sale, had a higher price than I was expecting. Good for some of us, not so great for someone looking to get into one for a steal.

Well that's good to hear that values are starting to go up, but sad for those wanting to get on the wagon

Yes, it's easy, you will need:
M113
W202 C43 engine mounts (Although I am not sure if donor car M113 mounts are maybe the same, you should check!)
M113 manifolds, probably from W202 amg because they are very tight for the steering box clearance.
722.6 auto from donor car (or 6-speed manual from crossfire/CLK)
Linkages to suit manual or shifter & linkages to suit auto.
Radiator from petrol v6 w202
Gearbox mount - there are many to suit different configurations, I chopped the centre out of mine & rewelded to suit the gearbox but OEM may be possible from a breakers.
Prop shaft - small engined W202's have small diff & thinner prop - Get prop & diff from a larger engine w202 or start with a larger engine w202 (C250TD & E300TD) props are best - the E300 may be a direct fit (W210 chassis)
Complete loom from donor - get it demobilised and wiring would be much simpler - alternate is standalone MS etc, but interfacing with the dash is trickier.
Radiator pipes - use OEM from 202 & donor, buy some aluminium couplers to adjust because the connections are different places, but not hard.
Auto will need ATF cooler - the rad should have an exchanger in the end tank. Factory pipes might work.
You will need a PAS pump from a steering box car not a steering rack car, so ideally use the w202 pump, may need to get one from a V6 W202 for fitment I think.
The radiator mounting is different (front to back) depending on factory engine in the W202 so you may need C43 type or V6 type, not hard to cut and mod though.
DIY exhaust or use the factory exhaust if your 202 is v6 powered. Although the C250td has factory 63mm (2,1/2") so would also work (remove the huge suitcase muffler in the middle and fit a through pipe, keep the last muffler or it's too long.

I am collectnig parts for this exact swap using an ML430 as a donor only because they are £800 here in UK (about 100 bucks US)

Beers!

Wait! Are you telling me that I can have a 6-speed manual transmission C43 W202 AMG if I can source a tranny from a Crossfire???

yeah, there's actually a guy who has a CLK and E M113 6 speed swapped. He's on YouTube and has a really good "how to" video on his channel. Jikjakz is his channel
