C43 transmission went bad - ideas?

Hello everyone
I have 1998 C43 with about 70,000 miles and my transmission went out...
Last week, I just left the house and not even a mile away I heard some metal noise and it started to make some grinding noise, when I pressed on gas it was barely driving - felt like something broke off and got stuck and not letting it spin.
Day before that I changed front passenger upper arm control and the noise sounds like it was coming from the right side. Initially I thought it might be something related to that but after looking over the arm control, everything seems to be good there.
Putting the car on Drive was creating more noise I believe.
Now the transmission if either completely dead - when putting on Drive, it would just rave but not drive at all. But if you press the gass on Parking and hold it to about 2000 RPMs, transmission would kick in (I believe) as it start to make noise again and when changing it to D you can feel the transmission kicking in.
Anyone has any idea? Do I have to change the whole transmission assembly?

Thanks

You can pick up these transmissions pretty cheap nowadays. Way cheaper than a rebuild and chances are itll be good for a while.

Where are you located?

I'm in Minnesota. Do you know of a good trusted source where I can get one?

I thought maybe someone had something similar and knows what exactly is the problem as well...

Not sure around there.

I had a 68k mile trans from a 99 c43 that I sold for $350,

Thats less than what they go for but you can get one at a trusted dismantle yard for $500.

Id look for a newer model one like a 2000-2002 clk55/e55

C43 comes with 722.631 transmission, right? Does it have to be the same?
CLK55/E55 transmissions are different am I not correct?

Thanks

My c43 has a trans from a 2001 e55. Not sure what the previous owner had to do to get it to work. I dont think its that complicated.

You have to swap output shafts. Otherwise it's a bolt in swap. I have the trans out of my C43 but I think it was on it's way out so I couldn't sell it in good conscience.

I believe Sun Valley transmissions is a reputable source for a rebuilt MB tranny

now is your chance to put in a beefed up super tranny. dont go with the same one.
