yea, I've seen this on the news. It's been going on for years. And it's not only MB.

I read somewhere that putting the key fob on sleep mode will help prevent this.

Well, either I worry about thieves and accidents or I keep insurance. And since insurance is mandatory I'm not going to worry (that much).
