Just got Hosed by MB Service

So I brings my car in for its yearly service and ask the service guy about the Technical Service Bulletin for the Bunny Hop issue, the one that
updates the fuel pump and the Transmission. He says he knows of nothing having to do with that and says the Mercedes TSB I got from a thread on this site
is not a Mercedes.

He calls me back later in the day to say he checked for any software updates and found one for the Transmission and the Fuel pump, he then says it is not approved as a necessary update by Mercedes and will cost $148 if I want it done.

Just a heads up if you are looking to get the "bunny hop" in S+ low gear issue fixed. I read on here that others were able to have their dealership do the update for free.

Should have told him the transmission was jerky and they would have done the update for free.

Ironically enough, going in tomorrow morning for this reason specifically because of that update folks were talking about. Will reply with update.

Hmm makes me wonder if I should even ask about getting the update before accepting delivery or wait a couple of days and "bring it up as an issue"

I would definitely say you want that looked into before taking delivery...and get their answer in writing. These TSBs are usually VIN dependent, and may not apply to your vehicles build date.

As for the OP's dealership...time to find a new one...

Yea dude, I did tell him and he said that was very unusual and they have not heard about that issue before with the AMG vehicles. He also gave me a lot of **** for giving him a TSB number I got on this site- stating it was not a MB TSB and not valid.

The stealership did email the invoice this morning and it seems they did not charge me for the update, I will know when I pick the vehicle up later.

I will report back if it made any difference or fixed the bucking issues.

BTW this dealership is one of the largest AMG dealers in North America and also a Renntech certified dealer- go figure.

My dealer also told me that the TSB number I gave from here couldn't be used for the bunny hop issue. However, the reason they gave was that it applied to Canadian vehicles only. If you're in the USA, could you post what the TSB # was that they found?

Burlington MA? If so, I'm very surprised. MBOB have always treated me like a King...service managers Steve & Jim have always been great to deal with.

Steve & Jim are no longer there, lol just kidding.

I just picked my car up and the service guy said he spoke to the service manager and they were able to wave the fee for the updates. which is very good because this should be a warranty issue anyway seeing my car only has 8K mi on it.

The updates to the fuel pump & trans made a noticeable difference in my vehicle. Now it pulls very hard in the upper rpm's like 5800 to 6400 when it did not in the past and the transmission shifts very fast compared to before. I am sure this won't be a good thing for gas mileage, the way I drive but who cares. I only had about a half hour to spend with the car on the ride back but it was a good update so far- and definitely made me take notice on a full throttle romp through 2 gears!!!!

It was only taching to 6100 under full throttle before shifting, now it is shifting close to the 6500 mark and taching faster also.

Don't get me wrong it doesn't feel like a full after market ECU tune, but it made a noticeable difference to me and my dealer MBOB is good in my eyes again.

Good to hear there's a fix for this car. Has it taken care of the bunny hops so far? Any luck the TSB # is on the service sheet?

It’s almost comical how many posts are about this and everyone says they get the fix, and then nobody provides the number. I am going to pick mine up today. I will make a dedicated post to the number if they did the work.

Update: I just talked with my MB dealership. They were not able to reproduce the issue, and what’s more they did not have any LIs related to the TCU or fuel mapping for my car. I found a service code/number here on another forum post and the senior tech said it looked like a c300 code. Sorry guys, still no code.

Bummer. Thanks for letting us know and GL on the fix. Perhaps another dealership can help you test for some $$$?

My car has been doing this more and more often. Even in sport mode (not even sport+).

There isn't necessarily a service bulletin but there is definitely a software update. My dealership would never charge me for asking for the most up to date software. I just had this one done. A little smoother for sure but then I put the Dinan Elite in and never looked back!

I reviewed my invoice for the ECU update performed and there is no number or code for the update. It looks like they pulled the entire ECU from the vehicle and re-programmed it. I noticed this because they did not tuck the wires going to the ECU back in a neat and orderly fashion as it came from the factory.

I can say one thing as it pertains to my vehicle, the fuel pump update made a big difference, especially in the high rpm range, the car pulls much harder and is even briefly spinning the tires on the first/second gear shift. The trans update makes the car rev a lot quicker with the pedal response being much better.

One thing I did notice though was that the car is using a lot more gas when I put my foot in it, which is often.

I really had to twist the service advisers arm to get this done. He told me that he had heard of no such update for my vehicle and would not agree with me no matter what I told him and did not seem to believe me- also told me the TSB I gave him was not an MB number and kept asking me where I got this info form. It was not an easy task for me trying to convince him that there was an update.

I must have gotten through to him, because he called me 3 hours later and said that he did some research and found an update for the Fuel Pump & the Transmission, but it was not a required update and I would have to pay for it. In the end he was able to get his Service Manager to approve it, so I wasn't charged.

Over all I would give the dealer an excellent rating for sorting this out. But I am sure this would not have been addressed if I hadn't mentioned it.

And no it did not seem to eliminate the bunny hope issue in my case- though mine was never that bad.

Truth but I've yet to run into any dealer that wouldn't try this type of crap.

OP, no offense intended, but don't be such a pushover! Dealerships use these [unethical] tactics only because they work. All they do is confidently tell you some vague explanation of why "it's not covered" under warranty and because most people (especially the affluent type of people that drive Mercedes) don't like conflict, they won't question little charges like this.

Sounds to me that he consulted with his supervisor on your being proactive about the TSB and they figured they had better waive it before you come in and cause them any issues - AKA: call them on their BS. So next time something like this happens, just say something like 'No, that's unacceptable. Please get me the manager' and see how quick the story changes

I apologize for bringing this old thread up but was wondering if this only affects C43 or it also affects the C450.

To my understanding it affects both models, originally the engine was running lean at the top rpm so MB updated the fuel pump and the transmission shifts faster and holds gears longer- especially in sports mode.

Hope this helps-

Btw to all poster on this thread- I went back to the dealer twice since this occured a few months later and at both times they brought up the transmission and Fuel pump update- but said I already had it done. So I am sure they eventually would have done the upgrade, without any arm twisiting.

Thanks Lazz. I appreciate the follow up. I have a service B coming up and will mention the fuel/transmission software patches. I think I found the actual TSB campaign which was issued in March 2018. The Subject is Update fuel system control unit software. Time to download new patch is .1hr so that is not even long at all. I couldnt find the transmission campaign but perhaps they are lumped together.
