Service B - Ouch
 

Hey, just took the car in for my service B at 19k miles. The dealer wants $665 for the standard service, and they're saying my rear brakes are shot and need to be replaced for another $390.

I remember asking about the service B last time, and they quoted me $450ish, not sure how we ended up here. Also it seems crazy to me that rear brakes would need to be replaced at 19k miles. Has anyone else experienced excessive rear-brake wear? Is this the standard price for a Service B?

Find a good Indy mechanic and save a ton of money.

What did they charge extra for? Just had service B done and they initially wanted $450

They also said my rear brakes need to be replaced at 20k miles. Crazy that the rear brakes would need to be replaced before the front brakes

I believe that if you've got distronic and use it a lot, it wears out the brakes pretty quickly. Re the B service charge, you should have bought the service plan. That locks in the price.

FWIW I had over 32k without replacing brakes on either front or rear. Distronic was used for ~10k if I could guess

I'll throw in the DIY suggestion for future service. You could do the oil change, brake service (pads and rotors if necessary) and buy all necessary tools for less than what this entire service cost. If you can swap out a flat, you can do any of this yourself.

Yeah, I used to work on my own cars back in the day, but I got lazy and spoiled at some point... Also, I got the extended warranty, so I want to make sure that stays intact.

There is another dealer not too far away, so maybe next time I can get a little price-war going. Apparently the rear brakes wearing out early is not too uncommon, and I do drive like an *******, so I guess it serves me right!

That's not terrible, I used distronic about 90% of the time, and drive pretty aggressively. Sounds like it's just going to be the way things are!

a couple things. brakes on this car are stupid easy for front if rotors dont need replacing. even so, brakes are usually very easy regardless. especially on new cars with no rusted parts.

rear pads wear out because the traction control system uses them when we slip. So if you are lighting up traction control, drive in very windy areas and cross traffic assist is used or any other auto driving feature, they get worn because they are used by auto systems. they chose this because they have less of an effect on steering to slow car down and or keep it in line.



i wrote a diy step by step guide for oil changes for our car. its in the forum somewhere. pretty easy. i paid for a service to throw my dealer a bone cause they helped me with some stuff but i will not pay for a b service as it starts to get much more expensive.

I paid $325 for the 20K Service B at an indy shop.

Went to the dealership because my brakes were squeaking. Dealership calls me stating both my front and rear pads are between 3-4MM and need to be replaced. I only have 6,500 miles on my car. I have service included but they're telling me brakes aren't included in the prepaid maintenance. Dealership wants about $650 to replace brake pads.

Well, brakes are not included in prepaid maintenance nor is normal brake wear covered via warranty (at least in the US, not sure where you are). That said, while some members have had a corner go bad that early, not sure if anyone has had all 4 wheels go that early.

Either something isn't right with the car, the dealer is stretching the truth, or you are unbelievably hard on brakes. Did you have a look at the brakes yourself? Is it all 4 corners? I would push back a little bit and maybe contact MB customer service to see if they will help with the coverage due to the early wear. Again, they are not obligated to unless something is wrong with the car, but they might be nice.
