Carbon Fiber spoiler issue

I recently purchased a carbon fiber spoiler (Withholding name of company) for my 2019 C43 Coupe. I received the first one and had it installed and noticed it was peeling (See photo one) and they said send it back and they shipped me another one. I had the second one installed and I noticed the same issue. My questions are as follows is this normal for CF to look like this? And should I send the second one back? I wrote to the company and am waiting to hear what they say.

This was the first one they sent and then replaced

This is the second one.

No, this is definitely not normal for a quality part.

I'm not a Carbon Fiber "expert" by any means, but I've been told that if the mold is not not really smooth, you'll get some issues and won't get the natural shine coming out of the mold-- those 2 look like they might be in the same spots, (hard to tell from the partial pictures) so that might be an issue.

I'm assuming the part is not clear coated or anything? Just a bad original finish?

Was the CF spoiler from a vendor here? I decided to just buy one on Amazon because I can easily return that thing months after if I decide I do not like it. But there was no defects with the spoiler so I am really happy that I spent the money that I did around 170$

It looks like something is wrong with the Polyester gelcoat, the material that is used to provide a high-quality finish on the visible surface of a fiber reinforced composite part. The most commonly used gel coats are based on either epoxy or unsaturated polyester resin.

Not normal........get better quality.

Thanks for all the replies and this was not a cheap one. It from from a company that participates on this forum. I am giving them benefit of the doubt but would have hoped the second spoiler would have been thoroughly checked as the first one was defective. Thanks for all the help on this and will keep everyone posted on the end result.
Also, someone mentioned that the mold may be the issue and funny enough area is around the same location so it does seem this could be the case. This leads me to wonder if I should just request getting a refund and move on to another vendor for my spoiler.

Agreed that it’s three strikes and your out. I already ordered one from another vendor but am going to try and get my money back from this one. I email and will wait to hear from them. If I do not hear from them tomorrow then I will call them to see what they say.

bad clear coat, could get a shop to rub it back and re clear it for you

gordotre 01-14-2019 05:46 PM

Heard back from the vendor today and they are going to send me a label to ship back the item and issue me another refund for the second one. I was told “This is fairly normal as resin can come through the carbon fiber when it is curing.” Not sure I agree with this or not but I am getting a refund so I guess all is good.

I have BNIB one but its a "Cheap" one but looks awesome. I can look at it in more detail to see if its any issues under a light

It's either a bad spot in the mold or when the mold is put in a vacuum to cure the vacuum is not pulling the polyester to that spot. Looks like the fiber isn't coated with resin. They should have seen this way before the part was shipped. And then to ship another is crazy. Wonder where they were made and he's got a whole stack of them and is just shipping stuff. I'd move on as you did and glad he at least took care of it.

This is a clear case of poor quality clear coat. I have the same problem but I'm going to fix it when the weather gets warmer.
First if you want to do it yourself, it's really easy to clear coat it again but this time use a 2K Clear Coat.

First wet sand the full spoiler with 300 grit. Tape and mask off the car if you can't remove the spoiler. Sanding should make it dull without going through the fibers. Once you have the full spoiler dull and looking as one smooth surface. Paint it with the 2K clear coat. It must be 2K as this is harder and will prevent yellowing. Put about 2-3 layers of protection. If you see any imperfections, just wet sand with 1000 grit, polish and seal.

Done.

Good luck

Thanks for the tip and details on how to properly do this I do not feel I should have to do this on a new item I purchased. I am going to return it, get my refund and I have already purchased a mode carbon spoiler so hoping this is much better. I certainly paid a lot more so figured are crossed.

Thanks again for the reply and details on how to fix the issue.

Cosworth2000 01-16-2019 09:23 AM

No problem. Glad I can help.

Hope others see this and they know what they can do.

awesome thanks bro!

Are all parts for this car carbon fiber? I can’t seem to find just a gloss black spoiler or the side skirt cover. I want to match it with all the stock gloss black parts on the car.

I don’t think they sell the side skirts that’s carbon fiber. I just have the spoiler. It’s not a perfect fit but once I held down for the double sided tape to adhere it looks fine.
