What to think of Top Gear's review of C63 VS M3 Vs Rs4

The review although was interesting did not talk about 1) Ride comfort 2) Seats, configurationg of the cars ( transmission setting, wheels etc) .

They had a big concern for C63 on the following

1) Traction control : Alll the other reviews mention that this new c63 can put power to the ground very well due to refined suspension, reclaibrated ESP etc but Jeremy mentions how bad the C6 is struggling with the ESP -

Here is quote from Top Gear's review of C63 Amg in August 07
"This car will give the new M3 a very hard time indeed. Unlike the CLK63 Cabriolet I drove recently, the chassis isn't overwhelmed by the incredible power and torque of the engine. It not only copes, it feels natural. "

Another quote from Evo review of C63 AMG
"It is a seriously, seriously quick car. There are no traction issues either, the C63 deploying every last scrap, the yellow ESP triangle staying resolutely unlit unless you start clomping the throttle provocatively."

Now whch of the above is accurate?* i am not sure what to believe now

2) Looks are subjective so that's a moot point. IMHO C63 looks great in white or black and classy in Silver

Another quote from Aug top gear review of C63
"The car looks good, too - not overblown, but understated and quietly evil in the way a fast Mercedes should be. That includes the twin bonnet bulges, which are purely cosmetic, 19-inch titanium grey wheels (18s are standard) and excellent dark inserts in the headlight clusters. The whole effect is superb."

3) Camber on tires: Jeremy shows the left rear tire and how bad the tires are after 40 miles , not sure if this was an anamoly with this cars camber

Handling: all reviews mention that this C63 is the best handling amg car, better riding than c55 , excellent steering feel and 95% close to m3 in handling and may be slighly inferior only on race track but superior as a road car ( comfort, auto, torque etc )

But this review kinda criticizes all the above except engine and do not mention about ride quality

I guess it is all too vague for me now

Nonetheless... the M3 absolutely smoked the C63 around the track. 5sec is an eternity.

Militant-Grunt Dec 24, 2007 01:43 PM

+1

That really is a lot of time, and even better the RS4 was only a fraction of a second off.

GBlansten Dec 24, 2007 01:44 PM

I'm in the market for one of these cars this fall. Tough decision. The C63 looks better. I wouldn't mind a MT so the M3 is appealing.

rahulanand1130 Dec 24, 2007 01:49 PM

i really thought the 63 was going to be quicker around the track. Oh well, i still like AMG better than M personally.

tanktube67 Dec 24, 2007 02:01 PM

By watching the videos the major problem I can see with the C63 is stability

ProV1 Dec 24, 2007 02:06 PM

5 sec's slower than the M3.. what a shame. C63 is a pig! :smash:

if the Stig & TG crew had that much trouble keeping the C63 on the track, i can already see fanbois crashing their brand new C63s when they take delivery

GBlansten Dec 24, 2007 02:08 PM

With ESP on most people will be fine.

First of all, in regards to the handling, traction and track times, did the C63 AMG they were testing have the performance package that includes the the limited slip differential????

Well it had the 19s, so I think so.

Yes, I originally thought that however looking at the MB Germany site it appears you can opt for the 19'' wheels and not necessarily have to choose the Performance package. I don't know......perhaps I am just translating it wrong.

NewC32AMG Dec 24, 2007 02:53 PM

i kinda still like the looks of the C63 better

ProV1 Dec 24, 2007 03:12 PM

"the best handling Mercedes ever", and it's still f##KING FIVE SECONDS slower than the base M3. WTF!!! i'm so f##king mad. :smash:

so who f##king cares if the car is making 500HP, it's pretty much useless if it cant be controlled.

alroumi Dec 24, 2007 03:27 PM

Who cares if the M3 is ahead, just enjoy the short drift on the bends :y

i think this test shows how much better the M3 is on a TRACK but on the streets racing from traffic light stops and highway runs, u can kiss the M3 bye-bye.

I don't know about you guys but i don't know ONE MB owner who "tracks" their car. Many MB owners could careless what the car could do on a "track" or the "twisties"...i will never find myself in the "twisties". The MB is the more practical car, and is much faster in everyday light to light racing. I personally am going to be in the market for the C63 because it is bigger, more practical and more luxuries, and is a beast for it's price. Sucks for BMW, the GT-R will smoooooooooooke it in the "twisties" :rolf:

IwantA124 Dec 24, 2007 05:21 PM

If they say that the Mercedes is that much of an out of control beast then I can imagine what they will say when they test the 2009 CTS-V

Militant-Grunt Dec 24, 2007 06:25 PM

I'll take the stability and poise of the M3 over 45hp+ and 4000lbs.

If you don't track it, then why bother buying the AMG? Red light races? Please.

PS: Top Gear obviously likes to tell an entertaining tale, and that skews the reviews. Jeremy needed the C63 to be a crazy road-monster, because that made for fun TV. I'm sure it's well controlled. I'll wait until a few car mags review these things. Keep in mind that different cars play differently on different tracks.

tasho3 Dec 24, 2007 07:39 PM

in my opinion the c63 is by far the best....o the m3 beat it by 5 sec so whats the deal cause with what i see thats the only think that the m3 is better at cause at everything else they mentioned the c63 was better. roomier, more practical, more power and faster in straight line. these are all street cars and when you pull next to a light on the street you don't ask your opponent lets take it to the track you go for that straight line to the next light. these are all luxury cars that are tuned to be more fun than just a regular luxury car and by far you would have more fun in the c63.

More like if you're going to track it, why buy a AMG? lol. 90% of AMG owners don't track their car. AMG is not only for the "track". People buy the AMG becuase it comes with many nice features, inside and out, and more importantly it is a beast to drive. You don't have to track your car to have fun. IF i was gana track a car, i sure would not a pick a auto AMG to do it....dosen't seem fun at all :nix:

Where can you drive legally and safely like a beast?

In truth, you're right. Of the three, the AMG and RS4 are much better everyday cars. They are for different buyers. A lot of M3 buyers track their cars. Not as many RS4 buyers do, and even fewer C63 buyers will.

Legally?...:topic:;)

I agree, I konw many M3 owners who track their cars. I personally can't see myself tracking a 70k car. :zoom:

I think you should ask the AMG community on how many actually bought theirs for the track (real track racing, not just 1/4 mile strip or 0-60). Just because you track yours doesn't mean everyone that has an AMG should track it too. Childish remark.

The only thing I like about Top Gear is their ridiculous comments. I get a kick out of their dumb remarks every time. Everything else is just a bunch of B.S. and lots of sarcasm. Most of their test are just from driving crazily around the track. If you want real track races one on one, give it to the Japanese. They know how to race to see which car is really better.

I'm still disappointed that the best handling AMG ever built still trails the M3 around the track. But like another poster mentioned, who actually races around the track these days. Everything I've seen, witnessed, and participated in is from red light to red light or an open country road. Straight line power is all I need to beat all those ricers out there...and then some more....hahhaha!
