C63 Sorted - Cam Sensor Faulty
Seems mine is not the only one.
Symptoms: Orange engine diag light (bottom left fuel/temp guage) - when driving Immediate loss of power/misfire Misfire on restart enough to cause engine to shut down Worth keeping in mind. Nothing to worry about - simple fix - cam sensor was replaced. ....If you see one on the shelf at the local supermarket it may be worth picking up just in case :) |
How exactly do you change the cam sensor?

Details please. I'm sure if this has affected more than just your car, the group would like to know the facts about the replacement. I think you said it left you stranded and was towed to the dealer. How long for the fix, was the part on-hand, etc.? Thanks.

For me, the light was glowing what I would call "yellow" and the car ran fine. I only heard the pinging once, thank gawd. Dealer said it was OK to drive. It was the camshaft position sensor for the right cylinder bank. My car has the build date 05/08 stamped on the door, not sure the exact day but it had to have been very early May, maybe even late April, there may have been a bad batch of sensors installed then.... :confused: |

(I've searched for a couple days) Instead of making a new thread lll use this really old one.
What are the parts numbers for: -Crankshaft position sensor -Camshaft position sensor A&B Also where are these located on the motor? I can't find a diy on these though I've read it's not complicated and that's about it. Thanks in advance. |

I had a cam shaft sensor issue the other day too. My car had to be towed in and the right bank exhaust cam had lost its position at cold start and needed to be re-taught. In my case the issue did not come back.
I am wondering whether the cam sensor is about to go bad. |

Apparently they are pretty cheap sensors it's interesting they didn't just replace it. I did learn from you I likely just can't diy pop them in and start the car once I get them due to needing a teach in. |
Regarding having to teach the cams their position after swapping the sensors - not sure. Maybe, maybe not. It is possible that the sensors do not make a difference to the position detection. I would ask my tech at the dealership to be sure.
The sensors cost 40$ a piece via mailorder. The inlet sensors are different left/right, the outlet sensors are identical. |
Thought I'd throw these pictures in for those wanting to do this. I changed all 4 just because it's easy and cheap, both inlets and exhaust.
This takes maybe 30 minutes, save your self some cash on labor (I was quoted $400 labor by MB), also in parts I totaled $170 and MB quoted me $240. $470 in savings!! No calibration of any sort needed after changing? Just take the old ones out and pop the new ones in? Seems like good preventative maintenance seeing how many of these go, or act up on their way out. |
