Winter setup help me choose

I am trying to figure out which way to go staggered or non staggered.

The setup will be on stock rims

I'm about to buy some winter/all seaons and I personally would just go with stock.

Unfortunately, for the Cdn winter, I'm afraid you'll need new rims. You need to have the same size on 4 wheels and with 245, you'll just surf on snow or slush. Unless you only take your car for city driving when the road conditions are dry but weather may not be that predictable.

235/40-18 all around.

That's what I put on my stock wheels last winter and had zero problems.

I love these polls. There is absolutely NO perfect setup. What's it for? What are your winter conditions? Think about it - if you have streets that are cleared almost immediately, and it snows about 7-10 times total per year but is freezing cold the rest of the time - then a wider tire with a soft compound makes sense. If you live in a place that forbids salting of the roads and it snows every week throughout the whole winter and it takes plows days to get to you - then narrow tires make more sense, perhaps even studded ones too boot.

That being said, only recommendation I would be comfortable in making not knowing the rest is buy non staggered. Then you can at least have one set of tires you rotate saving some money.

Personaly:

Spend the $1000 on a cheap front wheel drive beater, instead of smaller rims and snow tires.

No matter what tire you use, ANYTHING that will clear your brakes, will NOT make for a GOOD snow/ice situation. And of course what could happen when you slide. Notice I said when, NOT If

Save the wear and tear on your NICE car, put it in the garage, and BEAT the **** out of a cheapy FWD.

Just my $.02

Calgary gets 8 months of winter. I would never get to "drive" my nice car. Cars are meant to be driven in all conditions. Otherwise it is just a garage queen.

The C of 63's
I just ordered 235/40/18 from tunerworks in calgary. Is there a reason that that size is not on the list? You have me worried know. I plan on putting them on the stock rims. Has anyone on here drove their 63 all winter in calgary? Mine arives this week and coming from and S4 I'm a little worried.

Reason for using the C63 in the winter is that winter really isn't too bad here. Also I am not too into showing up in a 1000dollar beater nvm i would have to have a place to store it when I am not using it which would be most of the year.

Anyways thanks guys for the reply.

Hi Sebring,

I just ordered the same size 235/40/18 all around and just want to be sure that they will fit on the rears. The tire guy told me they would but I had a little trouble with that. So, if you did it and had no trouble that's enough for me.
I bought Dunlop Winter 3D's. Pretty highly rated at Tire Rack. We'll see!!

i would just order a set of rims and tires on tirerack if you can swing the money. Then you can run 225/40/18 all around.

You'll be fine with that size tire going on the front and rear OEM wheels, Dom. The folks who are recommending a 225 width for snow tires aren't wrong, as a narrower tire for winter duty does make a lot of sense. But you won't get that onto the rear wheels which means a second set of wheels will indeed be required. I just figure I'll eventually get another set of 19" wheels anyway, so I might as well keep the original 18" wheels as my winter set-up.

Having the second set of 18s allows you to rotate front to rear. That in itself might be worth the cost of admission. Do these cars go through winters as fast as summers?

I ordered a set of Bridgestone WS-60 in 235/40/18 for winter. But I would suggest to get a cheap winter beater for snowstorms.
