How's our Top End?

I know our mid-range game is ferocious, but how exactly is our top-end.?
The other day i was on the freeway goin about 80, and i stomped on it, an i swear i look down at the speedo a few secs later and i was already doing 130,, i mean it felt really bad$$, Are M5's and M6's really that much faster, stock? Than us?

yooker Dec 9, 2009 11:24 PM

Yes they are.

REDSRT Dec 9, 2009 11:34 PM

How so? Is it the gearing?? They only have 50 more hp, but weigh more than us, plus we got more torque. I guess ima have to race one to find out for myself.

SebringSilver Dec 9, 2009 11:41 PM

I'm pretty certain M5s and M6s have more up top than the C63s have. The 1/4-mile trap speeds for the Ms are invariably a few mph faster than those for the C63, so while we may do better from a dig, they'll usually catch up and pass us later on.

I really like my C63, but the truth is the M5 is an even higher-performance car.

yooker Dec 9, 2009 11:56 PM

Their superb gearing and extra 50hp really helps in the top end, torque is good for getting off the line but horsepower is where it's at when speed comes into play.

Only for a stock C63 potentially. Put a set of long tube headers and tune on one and walk away. The top end on our cars is incredible. Ask the M5 and M6 guys what they are running 60-130. I have a confirmed 8.76 with marginable weather here in Florida. The car has also been over 190 and will run mid 170's in the mile run. Don't be intimidated.

and the M6 with headers a tune and an exhaust will also have even more power and then the battle will not be so simple. You can not compare a highly modded C63to a stock M6 and get excited that you are quicker.

Once you work on the V10 it will scream even better. The M5 and M6 have amazing gearing. Stock to stock the E55 never had a chance. Most modded E55's can't keep up with the stock M5 in a serious Autobahn style pull.

Dads C63 Dec 10, 2009 02:22 PM

I didn't mean to imply it was easy. Can't a brother have some headers and tune for the lack of cylinders?? :D
All I was saying is that we can hold our own. :y

I love the M5 and M6 and think they are great cars!!

emericr Dec 10, 2009 04:16 PM

Cyncarvin32 - I beg to differ. Watch top gear where he compared the M5 and the E63 and the E63 beat the M5 fairly easily anytime there was a straight line and well above 125mph. The C63 is quite lighter but will fall behind past 100mph.

jafores Feb 23, 2010 12:34 PM

I am not sure if the M5 has a higher top end than a C63 but this is the Top end of a delimited C63 with an ecu flash that dynoed with a modest 10 to 15 additinal RWHP. Pretty close to stock I guess.

It's the gearing. The M5/M6 when SMG equipped really shine above 100MPH. However when those cars are 6MT equipped they aren't as deadly. The C63 7G auto is the weakest link on our cars.

1. I believe that the M6 is a tad faster than the M5, even though they both currently have the same V10 engine.

2. An ecu flash-tuned C63 AMG will outrun a stock M5 and probably be neck-and-neck with a stock M6, if not take the M6 as well, no? :nix: I don't think a stock M6 is trapping higher than 116mph.

3. Above 100mph in a tuned C63, say from 100mph - 150mph, I would say it would still be very close. :y

bhamg Feb 23, 2010 02:51 PM

I noticed that an English mag tested a modestly tuned C63 (≈+40 hp) for top end and got 194.6mph, said car was very stable at speed.

white_beast Feb 23, 2010 04:27 PM

Its so weird our car are not really stable at that speed!?? I actually feel like there is wind hitting me from both sides of the car felt like just a little left and right on the steering comin up to that speed!! Which guys it could get pretty scary!! I even have the performance package on my car and running on the oem 19s, but I guess stiffer suspension should help any recomenda guys! I think our cars may need a bigg ass wing to give it some down force, but that will ruin the whole Mercedes Benz
classy looks!

What you're experiencing is because of the relatively short wheelbase of the W204 platform and the fact that AMG spend very little time on aero aids. The rear diffuser on the C63 looks good but that's it- it's non-functional.

As for the Top Gear video referenced by emiricr, that show is to be taken with a pinch of salt. They left serious car reviews behind years ago and is now little more than an dim-witted entertainment show full of exaggerations for dramatic effect.

So it pretty hard for us to fix this problem maybe just a
little help fe stiff suspension and I guess that's pretty much it!

Raced a stock M5 many many times.

Stock C63, M5 will walk on you from 2nd gear on.

Stage2 Tune C63, will walk on a M5 until 280km/h then the M5 starts to walk on the C63.

BerBer63 Feb 23, 2010 05:00 PM

Stock C63 > M5 0-100 by 1-1.5cars, after ~100 M5 takes 1-2cars
Tune C63 > M5 0-100 by 1-2 cars, after 100-110 C63 keeps about 1 car, but feels like M5 could make a move after 140

Based on some real-world virtual simulations.

miami1lt Feb 23, 2010 05:47 PM

I think this gets into the entire "bang for buck" thing, and the fact that it can be frustrating to have such a great and powerful car, but know that there are others (even heavier and bigger cars) that can beat us.

In the end, the C63 is an engineering marvel with a tremendous output (both to the wheels and through the exhaust).

I have a buddy with an M3, and when we talk about speed, he says, "Don't let me get your in the turns". Well, hell, "Don't let me get you on a straightaway".

The M5 is a stout beast...and will probably take the C63 in both the straights and twisties...but what about the ****ty i-drive :nix:

What about all of the Camaro SS's, GTO 6.2's, G8's, Mustang GTs, etc...we are smoking the hell out of them :naughty:...but, they paid less and got less car/quality.

Well my C63 has the Perf pack and I walk my friends e63 topend. His car is dead even with the new M5s. Read my C63 vs E63 kill. Oh yes my C63 has great topend:y

This was a refreshingly mature and realistic conversation until you turned up. You must have a 600bhp C63 just like your CLK could beat E92 M3s. What luck you have to get faster versions of the SAME car as everyone else. The C63 is a really nice car but the likes of you will ensure its reputation gets dragged down to M3 levels.

superlubricity Feb 23, 2010 09:38 PM

Stock for stock my M5 was MUCH better up top. There is no comparison. A stock C63's power goes flat @ 5500 RPM.

Things even out a bit after a tune.

My '10 C63 w/ Kleemann K1 Tune vs. my stock '06 M5.

Well this was proven in the real world. Where my friend backs me up.:nix: Not putting the M5 down but this was proven.
