What Are Your ROAD Speed Limits?

G'Day guys, from "the land of downunder"!
I live in Victoria, the "Nanny State" of Australia, as defined by Mark Weber, when Lewis Hamilton was "booked" for doing a "burnout", .....in a C63!
In this Country, 100kph is pretty much the top speed limit on the open road, although there are some freeways where 110kph is legal.
Our road "laws" are becoming more & more "intrusive"...we have "hoon" laws in place....if ya lose traction, that is considered "improper control of your vehicle", or if ya make some smoke etc, you are liable to have your vehicle impounded...ON THE SPOT.
Anyway guys, I read some reports of "spirited driving" here, & I was just wondering what speed limits are in place where you live.....and could you lose your car for simply accelerating away from the lights etc, losing traction (making smoke!)etc etc.
I've been around cars for years....had lots of V8s, some of them displayed in car shows etc, and when leaving these events, there'd invariably be some young kids at the gate giving ya the sign to "spin 'em up", so of course ya would, & make some smoke....done it for YEARS.......but not any more.....if I do it now, my car's impounded.
Cheers, Pickles.

Pretty soon you wont be allowed to leave your house at night. Gotta love all the fuking rules and laws now. Can't do **** anymore.

It depends, In L.A. streets are 35-40 mph highway is 65mph.

DuaneC63 01-27-2012 03:50 AM

In Socal almost nobody strickly observes the speed limits in everyday driving. On city streets you can usually get away with 5mph over. On the freeway if you drive less than 75mph you'll get run down by a minivan. CHP doesn't even bother giving you a second look unless your pushing 80mph. Impounding only occurs if you're flagrant 100mph, reckless, racing, etc.

The only cool thing in germany, no speed limit on many parts of the highway :D

Best thing bout living in the middle east. I'm in Dubai and even though they have speed cameras everywhere, on major roads they of off at 120kph (~75 mph) and on a few big highways they go off at 140kph (~85 mph). Best thing however is that it's very rare for cops to actually chase you down so where there are fewer cameras you can hit some serious triple digits :)

derek 01-27-2012 08:39 AM

Speed limit, what's that? Only when driving around town is it remotely observed.

Sirex63 01-27-2012 09:20 AM

It's 140 km/h in Abu Dhabi, between every 2 speed cameras there is an additional one haha

justthebest 01-27-2012 01:09 PM

I limit myself to 2x the posted limit as a true maximum (when no one else is around / conditions are clear, etc), and under 20 mph over generally (as that's when the points start to get to be a problem).

shauni 01-27-2012 03:21 PM

Here in South Africa the highest on the highway is 120 kph!

Choy 01-27-2012 03:53 PM

With or Without cops?

shauni 01-27-2012 03:59 PM

Here it's heavy police presence.

Muskoka_AMG 01-27-2012 04:00 PM

Canada is the same as you. 100 km/h. Racing/test of speed/spinning tires/"stunt driving" = license suspension + car impounded + 2k-10k fine

I just take it to the track.

stangxs 01-27-2012 04:06 PM

Speed limits on Freeways here are 65, 70 on some highways. Highest I've taken the 63 was 155ish on a 70mph HWY (accelerated hard and braked when I reached that speed).

I agree. Driving 45 is probably the max you can go on local without getting pulled over. In certain parts of OC, I usually go 50-55 since most speed limits there are usually higher.

Sirex63 01-27-2012 07:45 PM

I forgot to add that every speed trap camera is a toy to me,so I don't care if the road is limited 60 or 300, I pass freely ;)

hyperion667 01-27-2012 08:45 PM

wow mate those are some strict rules around there:confused::report:
the speed limit in my area is 65, although not many are doing it....usually 80 or more.....some are going slower than the limit; as we have no minimum either....no one signals, everyone is on the phone or a computer....

I have a radar locater in one car, and it helps some....
it must been frustrating to be under such strict scrutiny while driving....
Driving is such a fun thing to do......and how can we get better on such a tight leash??

good luck man!:zoom::y

AMGJared 01-27-2012 09:12 PM

55mph speed limit in NY and 30-45 depending on the street. 55 is just pathetic, it really has no bearing...if your doing 55 on the LIE it will literally feel like your parked. General flow of traffic is 75+...when there is no traffic.

DuaneC63 01-27-2012 10:47 PM

A good radar detector integrated with a good stealth laser jammer and a sharp set of eyes is your best defense.

Mate, you are so right.....yeah, mobile phones.....forgot to mention that.....ya're in super serious trouble if ya're caught holding & using one of them, whilst you're driving!
we have a system where I am, where we have a "demerit point" system....in other words, when you are caught for an "infringement", it costs you a certain number of points, 1 to 12, according to severity....but if ya get to 12 points.....ya loses ya license.
Cheers, Pickles.

AlexCim 01-28-2012 08:37 AM

Pickles - Drive however you want mate.

Trust me that C63 > police cars, yes even from the SS TMU. Just have a smart passenger that understands the GPS button is also the "oh ****" button and can read you directions on the fly.

Otherwise I advise you observe all speed limits.

Yeah and the no cool thing is that you have to pay a lot more for gas, also the insurance is super expensive, you have to do the TUV inspection and modifying your car is very restricted due to the TUV.

That is why I do too..accelerate hard and hit the brakes as soon as I can. I don't like to maintain high speeds for too long.

Dueclaws 01-28-2012 11:31 AM

Some Texas highways are 80mph. Others range from 60-75 mph.
