Pulling the trigger next week, need advice!

Hi guys,

So here is the story, I've been looking for a CPO C63 for the past few weeks here in Miami but without any luck. So I started considering buying another car. Yesterday I test drove a 2008 CL63 , perfect condition, looks brand new with 55K miles. I literally fall in love with car and the sales guy took a deposit and I was approved from the bank. I told him I'll be back next week with the down payment (I want to give myself time to think).

Today I was on my way to get lunch and saw a 2009 C63AMG in the parking lot of the mercedes dealership, so I went inside and asked why the car isn't online and they said it just came in today and it wasn't listed yet. I asked for a test drive... I loved the sound of the car and the way the car handled. + It will save me around 10K and the car is CPO...

Now I have to make a choice, which car do you guys recommend and why?

I'm a bit nervous about the CL63 since it's a high end car, maintenance is going to be expensive and there is no warranty... the car looks perfect though..

So if you were me, what would you buy?

Thanks !!

Edit: If I get the CL, what options do I have to make her sound like the C63? How expensive would that be?

Don't you think the 49K tag is a little bit too deep for an 09 C63?

olszowa12 05-05-2012 07:33 PM

It depends what you are looking for.
The CL will be more expensive to mod and maintain.

The C63 however is far less comfortable - the ride is really harsh in comparison to the CL but I presume you noticed that during the test drive.
Plus, the C63 is CPO, under warranty and has less miles

Personally I don't see myself in a CL before I'm 45-50 years old.

It's because it's a CPO. When you go to autotrader and you compare the 09 CPO, they're averaging $52K.. That's why I'm considering the CL.. I'm not planning to mod the car, I'll probably keep it for 2 years max.. The only thing that I might do is removing the 2ndary cat to make her scream like a C63 ... (I'll need some advices for that part)...

What kind of expenses do I have to expect if I buy the CL?

The higher end the Benz, the higher the repair rate and higher repair cost with that higher rate.

Do you guys know a website where they sell parts for a good price? What brand do you recommend for the brakes? I'm gonna try to compare the cost. I'm not ready for a 5K brake job.. CL or not CL lol

If we forget about the money, and someone offered you the choice between a free CL63 and a free C63? Which one would you buy?! Thanks and sorry for my stupid questions but this is the biggest purchase in my life and it's making me really really nervous.

Save the money and start with the C63. You have a warranty and a more visceral car to enjoy.

The CL is a bossy car but you're paying a $10K premium for a car that's also out of warranty.

Isn't the CL reliable?

Fung63 05-05-2012 09:40 PM

As much as we all love our MB... we know that MB isn't the most reliable brand out there.

Dont get me wrong, it is definitely a great build. However, the 2008 CL63 is fully out of warranty and has decent miles on it. because it is not a CPO car, tons of stuff my not actually pass a CPO inspection... so you might want to budget some more Ks as a contingency for repairs.

Since you could afford a 59k car, you could also take that 59k for a C63, that will give a a late year 2010 with some extra money for mods. Else, you can talk down that MY2009 c63

Although the CL63 is definitely a sweet car, I would go with the C63 in this case

I'm not planning to mod the car at all, I'm not into modding, I think it's a waste of money... I made up my mind on the CL, I'll see if I can buy an extended warranty somewhere...

Price might be a bit much for the C63. They'll take less when you get serious. I'd get the CPO car anytime. You can also get the MBZ factory extended warranty on a CPO car which means when you go to sell in a couple years you'll still be selling a car with a factory warranty. The CL has alot more things that can go wrong with it esp the airmatic suspension which have a high failure rate and high repair cost. The C63 is alot more fun to drive.

hyperion667 05-06-2012 08:54 AM

wow, on one end you have the entry level C class.....on the other you have the high end CL class.........
you gotta think maintence in the future! that CL is going to COST you dude..........
but if you've got it like that, you got no worries....

Well looks like OP mind his mind. either way, either car, it'll be a fun ride.

What I meant by that is that it's a BIG waste of money when you will try to resell the car.. No ones wants to buy a used modded car, people rather do it by themselves!

I would go for the CPO--thus the C63. Somehow, I have noticed C63 just don't depreciate as much as other AMG's. Thus I went for a W212 E63 half a year ago...also went for E's larger interior, slightly better crash ratings, and the E63 being designed completely after Chrysler separated from Diamler. That brings me to another thing, the current c-class has really good crash rating. On the other hand, CL has no crash data from iihs, NHTSA, NCAP's.

Agree with above, any modding like those is going to depreciate your car some more.

Why don't you look for cars outside Florida? Six months ago, I almost drove down to pick up a E63 from Ft. Myers (I'm near Chicago, IL). I never made it down there, since I ended up picking up my current (alternate choice) car from Alabama instead. Don't limit yourself.

I must say that I used to love the C63 before the 2012 was released, but now it looks too odd for me. I'm not a fan of the interior and I like the 2012 C63 Coupé.. but buying new is not smart IMO. I'd rather buy the car after a year or two when the values drops. Also, I'm young, very young, I don't need a 4 doors. 2 doors is more appropriate in my case. The CL has everything, except the warranty. It's an awesome ride, it has the perfect color combo, black on black and it has every freaking single option and the price is just perfect, almost too good to be true!

I'm not planning to keep the car for more than 2 years, after then, I'll just trade it in before big expenses start and get a newer car... I only do 8000 miles a year anyway...

I made up my mind ! Anyone who would test drive the CL will fall in love with it! The massage function on the front seats is awesome! I want it, and now!

Never had a really good look at a CL63, except in a brochure.....but geez, they cost a lot new, & have a lot of VERY nice features...perhaps not as "hard edged" as a C63, but VERY nice indeed.
Can't tell much from a colour image, but if the car's good, you've got all the service records, books etc, and you like it, then GO for it.
Can you do stuff like talking to the previous owner etc?
Cheers, Pickles.
