Winter tires recommendations for Toronto Winter.
 

Hey everyone,

My dealer told me that I should look for 235/40VR18 tires for c63 for winter in toronto, but I have searched from tirerack and got nothing. Allso I have looked all michelin tires and there are no exact 235/40VR18 tires. 235/40 & 18 can find matching but "VR" can not. Can I get some winter tires recommendations from you guys?(for toronto)

Forgive the self-serving reply, but I have some one-season-old Dunlop Wintersport 3ds (235/40 front / 265/35 rear) that I'd be willing to unload cheap. Could hardly tell they're winters in the warmer temps (much unlike other mushy, bouncy "performance" winters I've owned), but never got to test them in any real, Canadian snow.

Will provide depth measurements if you're interested.

Its not "VR" is ZR and you don't need high speed tires for winter H speed is more then enough... Ontario legal top speed of your car is only 62mph... H speed is good to 130mph

That's my winter setup... against popular opinion they are 8.5x18 ET 35 which everyone said would not fit they work perfectly. Due to the large brakes on the front of this car your going to have to test fit every set of rims to make sure they fit... I have another older set of brabus wheels that are also 18's that do not fit but these 18's and the 18's amg that came with the car fit... also do yourself a favor and get the same width all around snow tires are meant to cut thru the snow not float on top my 275's would be like snow shoes in the winter.

I will choose one set winter tires from Pirelli Sottozero Serie II or Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D.
BTW, what is the Offset for both front and rear rims if I go with 235/40 18?

The offset for the fronts will be anywhere from 35-45. The rears if your matching them to the same width as the fronts will be same offset is the front. The purpose is so can you move the rear tires to the front every other season to prolong the life of the tires.

I am running 18x8 ET35 all around with 225/40-18 Blizzak LM-60. Very good winter setup. When I need winters again, I will go 235 square for a little better dry road handling. Anything wider and I find the car suffers in snow/slush. Also, I would personally go for a more winter oriented tire. Pirelli Sottozero and Michelin PA3 are so dry road oriented that they are horrible in bad weather. Many will say they are fine but I disagree. Try this with both the Blizzak LM-60 and Michelin PA3... stop on an incline with 2" of wet snow and see which one actually gets you moving again :) It won't be the PA3... I have run both on rear wheel drive cars in a Canadian winter so I know this from experience.

Anyway, it depends on what is more important to you. Having OK traction in bad weather (no performance winter tire gives great bad weather performance) and OK performance on dry pavement or having very marginal performance in bad weather and OK to good performance on dry pavement.

The Dunlop's are in between the PA3 and LM-60 based on everything people have written about them. Better dry road performance and slightly less bad weather performance than the LM-60. However, slightly worse dry road performance and slightly better bad weather performance than the PA3. They are very good compromise IMO for many people. For me, I don't like getting stranded or worrying when we get a dump of snow when I'm at the office so I sacrifice some dry road ability for the good bad weather ability of the LM-60. Probably the best snow/slush/ice "performance" winter tire out there... but not the best on dry pavement.

Based on tires I have had experience with...

Cold/dry handling (best to worse) ...

1. Michelin PA3
2. Pirelli Sottozero
3. Blizzak LM-25 (discontinued)
4. Blizzak LM-60

Snow/slush/ice handling...

1. Blizzak LM-60
2. Blizzak LM-25
3. Michelin PA3 (scary in situations with wet snow/ice, not bad in powdery snow under 2")
4. Pirelli Sottozero (scary in situations with wet snow/ice)

If I lived in Vancouver, I would take the PA3 hands down. If I lived in Calgary... maybe the PA3 too as I don't think they get a lot of snow (could be wrong). If you live in Toronto, Montreal or any eastern Canadian provinces, I would take the LM-60.

Yeh I went one size up on the winters to 235's. This year will be the first year of winter driving for me in the c63 all my other cars rear wheel drive benz's always used winter tires never had any problems...

This year when I picked up the car it had falken UHP tires on I drove them a few times in the snow didn't really have any issues... these summer performance tires where fine in deap snow.. but I did get stuck once 30 feet from my driveway I live in a really hilly area... the summer tires had no traction on ice... they did make it up some pretty steep hills before getting stuck I got stuck on like 2-3% hill with no snow on it :)

I'm surprised you made it one inch with summer tires. You sure they were not all season UHP tires? True summer max performance tires can't move the car even on a flat road with any accumulation of snow. They are complete hockey pucks.

I was on the way home from walmart and it started snowing. by the time i got home i couldnt even make it up the tiny slope to get into my apt complex with even a light dusting of snow on the ground.

ended up getting towed by my friend's eagle talon :smash:

Yep they had the same tread pastern as the one that are lying on the ground in my picture above they where uhp but nothing crazy like R compounds.
I was surprised too... but all seriousness just get proper winter tires for winter driving its worth the money especially on a car like this.

I'm going to give the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R a try this winter on the OE 18's in 235/40-18 all around.

I bet they will perform amazingly well in bad weather :y I would really like to know your feedback after you have them on for a while. My LM-60s will be done after this winter likely so I would consider the Nokian's next year.

From what I have read their "special" compound runs completely through the tread where as most, if not all blizzak tires is only in the top 50%.

I had the DM-V1 on my Tacoma and I noticed a difference on hard packed snow and ice once they got down past 6/32".

I've also heard the tread lasts longer with the Nokian so it makes up for the extra cost.

Nokian are best of the bunch.
I would give Dunlops 3D 2nd place (running these myself now).
Blizzak is pretty good.
Hankooks are actually pretty good for the price...

Are you really sure you want to put winters on your OEM AMG rims ?! You might be better off getting cheaper rims for winter.

Long story short - you get what you pay for and there is plenty of choices.

Call me and I will give you range of prices - you will decide what you want to go with.

i used them this past winter...they are much softer than summer tires (kinda like switching from steel toe boots to nike airs lol) but they lasted quite well!

I chose them to be super cautious having nearly 500HP in the winter but we got lucky with a fairly dry winter so they might have been a little overkill.
