Bad news after 1 month!! Cel, check coolant, smoke!

So picked up my 09 a month ago with 11k miles from Mercedes greenway in Houston. 700 miles later... I'm sitting in traffic last night and all of the sudden starts shaking at idle, heats up, coolant light comes on, cel comes on, and white smoke out of the back. Pulled over and got towed to dealership.

Here we go :(

I would strongly suggest that you read up on all of the coolant/head bolt threads (there aren't that many) before you talk to your service tech. You can compare symptoms and outcomes/costs with the folks who had to go through that exercise. It should also give you negotiating power.

myfault 03-02-2013 01:57 AM

fortunatley I have the factory warranty still on the car + cpo warranty, then an extended warranty after that. I just hope they change the head bolts and get everything right instead of just masking the problem

C-63AMG 03-02-2013 01:59 AM

Sit there with them while they do it and make sure they use the updated headbolts and not the same ones again.

ddcha 03-02-2013 07:54 AM

I'm amazed there hasn't been a formal recall for this. any updates anyone have on the litigation underway?

CoolBDPhenom03 03-02-2013 10:41 AM

That's why you need to research the issue. So you know what a true fix entails.

Merc63 03-02-2013 01:51 PM

There is a service bulletin for the head bolts now. They will follow it.

If the bolt head popped off completely, it will have be shot around the head like a arcade game.

jvanbrecht 03-04-2013 10:35 AM

There has been a blank service bulletin out for a while (typical boiler plate language in it, but no details). At least that I have found, can you post, or provide the link to the current SB.

JeffDL 03-04-2013 11:54 AM

this could be fuel injectors based on some of what you are saying. shaking / smoking..

myfault 03-05-2013 01:28 AM

update today. "looks like its going to need a new head gasket."

CoolBDPhenom03 03-05-2013 11:09 AM

Tell me they're going to change the bolts too. They have to take them off anyways, so they SHOULD.

jvanbrecht 03-05-2013 11:49 AM

They will, they are not reusing the old bolt style anymore.

CoolBDPhenom03 03-05-2013 11:52 AM

I know that they should, I just want to make sure OP knows that it is supposed to be done anyway.

myfault 03-05-2013 01:17 PM

thx guys.. I told my service rep about the bolt issue and please have them use the new bolts. He said don't worry, they know about the issue and everything will be done right

ddcha 03-05-2013 01:26 PM

that's good news. Can you ask your service rep if there is a TSB that replaces the old bolts BEFORE failure? I know warranty covers after failure, but what about a preventative TSB?

CoolBDPhenom03 03-05-2013 01:36 PM

:y

I actually asked that when I bought the car from them a month ago. Unfortunately no such luck

Don't rain on my parade...

good luck with it and I hope they fix it correctly....

myfault 03-08-2013 11:30 PM

Good news!! They put me up in a brand new c class all week, and I got my car back today. Turns out 'some' head bolts broke.
"Installed all new cylinder head gaskets, head bolts (upgraded bolts), lifter hydraulic tappets, all other listed gaskets. Perform 2 engine oil and filter changes. Perform multi point inspection."

johnnyblaze 03-08-2013 11:44 PM

Best case scenario. Great news :)

fn3423 03-09-2013 04:18 PM

Good to hear it worked out for you.
If anything happens to my motor I have a good reference to use and a local one at that.
Thanks for sharing.
