When to swap out winter tires?

NJ is colder than normal so I left them on for now.

When is the rule if thumb to swap? When mornings are 40F and up regularly?

When the temps are consistently above 45f (7c). Most tire manufacturers suggest that summer tires are ineffective (or, low grip) below that temp. I personally wait until mid to late April because if you happen to get an unusual snow fall or a cold, wet night then I wouldn't want to take the car out.

I find it VERY hard to have patience to wait to put the summers back on this time of year.

I just went through the whole winter in my 135 on summer run flats up in NY... Not fun. That being said, I don't see why it would hurt to put them on now either. But, waiting wont really hurt either though it does wear winter tires down on dry roads

You can manage the car fine with summers on in cold weather. Just dont lay into the throttle taking a corner. That said Im in Toronto and if my summer wheels (I ordered forgestars and its been 10 weeks already) were here I would have put my summer rubber on already.

Until the night it unexpectantly drops below freezing and there is just a tad of black ice on the road and the C63 is wrapped around a tree wearing summer tires

Maybe I'm too cautious but I love my cars and would rather wait a couple of weeks longer than take a chance that there are flurries, a very cold and wet night, etc. Can you "get by" with summers on in those cases? Sure. Is it smart or worth the risk? Not to me.

Awesome tires... one word of advice... even in summer, R888 are greasy as hell until warmed up sufficiently and then they stick like glue. In cold weather, it will be VERY hard to get heat into them. Be very, VERY careful until they are warmed a bit otherwise you may have a very unhappy surprise. In colder weather, this issue is exacerbated.

Ask me how I know . It was early morning in the fall (fairly cool outside) and I was on my way to the track in my M3. Had to stop quickly and was scared sh&tless as I almost slid through and intersection because the tires were still very cold. Think hockey puck on cold pavement

Thank you for the heads up I will be very conscious to that fact.
