Need Advice ASAP!

I pick up my new C63 AMG coupe tomorrow. I have the option to purchase tire and wheel protection....5 years....for $1300. It covers virtually all wheel and tire damage. Since the AMG wheels and tires are quite expensive, is this a sensible purchase for me?

Heard arguments for both and some people really benefitted from it. If you curb/bend the wheel they will replace it. Same with tire punctures I believe. Doesnt cover tread wear though but this was a long time ago so I cant remember.

I find it very hard to believe that they'll replace rather than repair a wheel for curb rash. If so, run don't walk to sign the contract.

Hit one pothole and the wheel is at least 1k the tire probably 300+. It definitely pays itself off for some people. I wish I would have gotten it myself because I hit a pothole on the FWY and caused 2k in damage to my two wheels/tires. I went through insurance and it was a big mistake since they hit me with a collision on my record, doubled my insurance etc. Insurance is just one of those things... If you need it, it's great if you don't you feel screwed. One thing I would ask if you let your girl/wife drive your vehicle.. I let my girl drive my car a few times and she curbed the hell out of my wheels.

I just got mine, without the protection. In all my years of living I don't think I've ever bent a rim. That's pretty extreme. Punctured tires get sealed first before they would replace them. Any shop can do this for less than $1300. Unless you have abnormally bad roads on your daily commute I would not bother. Your call though. Whether you pay 1300 now or 2000 later, whats the big difference.

is there any chance that you would go with aftermarket wheels in the future? if you spend enough time looking at pics on this forum, you may want those HREs or ADV1s in no time! And what about the tires? my dealer had a limited selection of tires so i went to another supplier for both my summer and winter tires...would these be covered under your plan? i would check the small print.

i recently had a nail in my Michelin PSS and it cost something like $80 to repair at the dealer.

They repair the curbed wheels and will only replace them if they're badly bent or cracked.

When I picked my car up, dealer told me that even aftermarket wheels would be covered for as long as they're not chromed. I got the impression that it's not something offered by MB itself but rather the dealerships (like having you windows tinted for example).

P.S. While you may want those HREs or ADV1s, I would suggest you pass on the ADV1s and buy the HREs.

Driven 11 years and have yet to damage a wheel. I've only had a flat once. Mostly depends on where you live. Also depends if you're an awesome driver and don't go around curbing. I've seen people ride curbs all the time and I cringe.

Do you live in the northeast?

I ended up buying a similar package, but it included roadside assistance, front windshield, lost key bobs, the rims and tires and paintless dent remover. 5 ys for $2000.

In hindsight, playing the odds and likelihood of each event versus the cost, it's worth maybe half that (yes, I made a spreadsheet).

I knew two people who bought it and both cracked two rims. I decided for the peace of mind, based on their experience, but that has a price.

All that being said, for just cracked rims... $1300 is too much IMO. If it includes curb rubs, maybe.

there are aftermarket wheels (if you go that route in the future), add your $1300 on that budget.. for OEM, there's always a pre-owned one available (here, ebay, craigslist, etc).. also, it all depends on how you drive - do you really need it? plus if you end up trading in the car you lose part of that money.

for tires, you'll be replacing the (rears) more frequently anyways - its not like they cover that too?

lastly, if you are not paying for that 'warranty' cash and add that to your loaned drive out cost - you are paying for interest on that $1300.

Really? I bought the W&T package. Paid $799. Just curbed an aftermarket wheel and got it replaced immediately.
Well worth the $$. Paid for the initial cost with one incident.

Excuse me NCBob, but your personal experience does not constitute research.

There is no research for this type of decision. The W&T package is a lucrative contract $$ filler at the dealership. It's an insurance policy that the insurer bets you will never use and they are right or they would not offer it.

Of course, the OP will do whatever they want to do. And if it makes one feel "warm and fuzzy" then by all means spend your money.
