ford svt's, and C63!!!
personal gains from aftermarket air intakes
Just inquiring because the factory setup looks very, very, efficient and unrestrictive. I would guess an oiled, cotton/guaze panel filter would breath a tad better than the paper panels and possibly removing the charcoals, but the boxes and plumbing look very nicely designed.
Also from my, "cheapskates" point of view is the prices people want for their intake kits is astronomical!! I'd like to hear what your gains where with an upgraded intake, wether modded otherwise or not.

I never heard about any aftermarket intake giving you some real HP gains.
Maybe Dad's custom RAM air system could be the more efficient from a blower perspective. But that's it IMO.
All those CF intakes from vendors are just great products look wise.
So my suggestion would be to stick with the OEM system and probably going with the ROW airboxes if you don't need/want to spend 1k$+ on a CF version.

Most aftermarket CF intake systems will mostly increase air flow with very minimal, significant HP gains. However, I read somewhere that the intake from Renntech is yhe only one that makes anything significant in terms of HP. Then again, that one is in the thousands.

FWIW, while the oiled gauze filters flow slightly better than paper (and thus by definition also filter less garbage), they have been known to screw up MAF sensors. There are high-flow paper elements that are drop-ins for the OEM filters that won't harm the MAF sensors.

i cant vouch at all for the c63, however on my previous slk 55. back to back dynos with new k&n's installed vs no air box at all (no filtering - only temporary) made a 10whp/15wtq difference consistantly on 2 occasions. So in that case sure maybe the 3k$ intake helps but it can only really help up to that much. Any more than that is not even a possibility. I'd imagine its not much different for the 63 motors. Benz doesnt leave a whole lot on the table with a lot of things. Hell the motors been out 8yrs now and no one even makes any better camshafts.
