Head Bolt Affected VIN - 2010 & older, & early 2011s

Hello,

As many of you know, I have been providing Datacard info to many members interested in their build sheet, or to verify engine serial number.

I received a PM from a member today who indicates he has a "late 2010 C63". The Datacard for the VIN he provided shows a delivery date of 11/24/2010. The Datacard indicates the engine number is over 4,000 engines beyond serial number 156983 60 060658 where the new head bolts were employed.

Since we've believed that all 2010 and older, and some 2011s were in the affected range, I'm confused about how this one could be outside the range. I did a search to find out which digit in the VIN corresponds to the model year, but had no luck getting a clear answer.

Anyone have any thoughts on all of this?

Thanks,

Joe

I'm confused about my situation to. My dealer ran my vin numbers and they told me I was ok. My car is a 2008 delivery date 04/08. Is that possible, that some 07-08 engines were not in the affected range.

Im a little curious with this as well, I have a 2010 and I might have headbolt issues. I had only 1 low coolant message displayed and just topped it off with some more coolant and never came back up then again I've never ran my car hard after the low coolant message.

I suggest you post or PM your VIN and I can tell you definitively if you're in the affected group.

Joe

Engine serial number is 156985 60 029969, which is very early in the affected range of engines.

Believe what you will, but to be sure you should post VIN or PM me and I can tell you the engine serial number.

I believe that theory was disproven.

I just reviewed past threads and the TSB data indicates the issue affects all M156 engines, up to serial number 569xx 60 060658

Have there been any failures of engines with the new head bolts? Can we be certain that the new part is the end of the problem, or has there simply not been enough time to see failures of the updated head bolts?

Porsche had IMS bearing problems early in the production of the water cooled engines. There was a pretty significant upgrade of the IMS bearing in MY05, but some small number of failures persisted even with the newer part until Porsche redesigned the engine to scrap the IMS altogether for MY09.

An 11/24/2010 build date would correspond to model year 2011. OP, have your friend check the model year of his car, I bet it's 2011.

No, very early 2011s can still have the older style headbolts in them. For example car WDDGF7HB3BF526091 has a build date of 05/31/2010 with engine 059999. Model year 2011.

My research showed engine 060658 corresponds to a build date of around 6/2010, which unfortunately is model year 2011. It would make sense then that a car made in 11/2010 would be several thousand past 60658. All 2008-2010 C63 are before engine 60658 and thus are potentially affected.

I agree with you, but he indicates it's a 2010. Also, he lives in the UK, so not sure if this means anything related to the VIN or engine range . I also can't make sense of the digit that is supposed to denote the model year. It should be a letter, but it's numeric.

Not related to the car model, only the M156 engine and its serial number. All 2007 cars with M156 are affected.

He's probably confusing model year with production year. A car built in 11/2010 would be a 2011 model in the US at least, perhaps they do things differently in the UK for some reason.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, however I was wondering if the CLK63 BS is also impacted? I'm shopping around for one. TIA

As indicated above and in other threads, the issue is unrelated to car model, only the M156 engine. The affected engines are in all cars that utilize the M156.

Your options are:

1. See your Dealer
2. Get an EPC Online account (free for US cars, and $12 for international)
3. Post or PM me your VIN number and I will look it up (I have an international subscription)

Regards,

Joe
