Using Space Saver Spare as Skinnies?

So I have seen it done once or twice before where people use 2 x OEM space saver spares on the front for drag racing as skinnies.

How safe is this considering the rating on them is 50mph not 130mph?

Is it a lot easier to lose control with skinnies on the front or does it not make much difference?

Obviously I would replace the original rubber with proper MT or Hoosier rubber for drag racing.

The idea with skinniest is to remove weight and some rubber drag.

The spare is a heavy *****, I don't think it would do much.

I think you will find ANDRA banned them in 2009.

If you are at a non ANDRA sanctioned track it may not be an issue.

Issue is that it is a speed limited wheel. It may be that the wheel itself is capable of far greater speed than the fitted tyre however it is not certified. If your wheel was suitably manufacturer stamped you might have a case to argue for using it.

Yeh the idea was to reduce weight, but no point if they are that heavy. Do you know the weight of them?

Thanks for the information.

Ill look into the weight of them and see if it is worth doing for, if so i might try and remove the stickers and see if they don't notice.

If this is the case then they are around the same weight as the custom skinnies Dads and other had made up.

I remember correctly the custom wheels gave appox. 21lb saving.

Ill need to get these weighed. Will let you know the weight difference from stock when I weight them.

If you have a scale handy that would be great.

My stock 18s are off the car but I don't have a scale handy, so was going to go get one to weigh them.

Appreciate it.

Thanks champ.

20b saving up from on each side gives a total of 40 lbs. That's a great weight saving for unsprung not to mention the drag reduction.

Thank you again.

There is an older 16" Merc wheel that will fit if you cut part of the brake pad, and use 10mm spacers. I remember reading this on a thread once before, mthis can chime in which specific wheel it was.

Brad you can buy them. I'm going to wait to see how my runs go before I buy anything for the track.

Once I get into the 10s I can't race anymore without a roll cage which I don't plan on doing and I think I can get a 10 without the 16s.

18s with ET Streets, MS109, removing the extra weight should be me close with a good DA.

We did 10.9 in dodgers car with stock 18's and full interior .minus passenger seat.62lbs

No video of the 10.9 pass but this was done same day.

same day full interior full weight minus spare and tools in the trunk I went 11.19@125.51 at that time my mods were tune headers mickey tompsons.

I think international shipping would be pretty costly.

Wow, 1.6 60ft, how did you launch to manage that?

Unfortunately our tracks arent as quick here in Australia. I am aiming for a 10 second car, and that is with a Weistec Stage 2 kit.

The fastest C63 in Australia has gone 11.6 with FBOs. I have gone 11.8 with the same mods.

I think the SC will take me close to the 10s, just need some good rubber to get a good launch and a good DA.

Ill then consider putting the spare as skinnies, getting MS109, and if need be ill then remove the drives seat.

Stalled the car up to 1200-1300 rpm and just keep the gas down after that. And use mickey tompsons if u use anything else on 18's u will have he'll getting 1.6x. The MT are a 40 profile so they flex more when taking off .

Try the skinnies and 16's and take few seats out I bet u knock .3 to .4.
U have to tune the car at the track the more u run it the more aggressive it get and the more passes u make the faster it goes. We did 30-40 passes a day at track events so that also helps a lot .
