Continental or Michelin Tires?

Hey guys,

I need to change my C63's tires. The present ones are Continental Tires, which you all know. A friend of my suggested that Michelin is the best to use in our cars. So, what are the best tires to use in my C63. Shall I go for Michelin?

Thanks,
El-Debs

We just went from a C55 with PSSs to a C63 with Contis. They're both great tires. I've only got 2,000 miles on the Contis but they seem to squirm a bit less. But they're noisier. So far I'm impressed with them.

So I've got a vote for Michlien PSS and a vote for the Cont.

What I am looking for the most exiting and safe tires to drive. So I still need more suggestions regarding which one to go with.

Except for the small fact that that review doesn't include the Continentals under discussion. The ContiSportContact 5P are the OEM tires on new C63s and E63s. The DW (dry/wet) tires in the review compromise dry handling with respect to these (and the PSSs) for wet handling.

In places like California and Qatar, DWs are not really in the running.

I said they're both good tires. I would be curious to hear more from those "voting" for the Michelins as to why. I'm not taking sides, just curious about other people's experience.

My comparison is between PSSs on a C55 with an open diff vs. a C63 with a LSD, so I recognize that it's hard to know what's the tire. But I prefer the sidewall rigidity, although that does make the tire noisier.

A final point is that I was getting great life out of the Michelins. I don't know how the Contis will compare, but they are so sticky that I suspect it won't be quite as good.

I used that comparison in deciding on tires recently. I have Michelin PSS 245/275 and got a screw in the sidewall of a rear tire so needed new tires. The 275 are not currently available so I looked at other options. I always kept coming back to Michelin so I ordered new 235/265 PSS rather than switch brands or mix and match. I replaced the fronts because of rubbing issues with the 245s.

I had no problem with the Continental 5P but I like the Michelin better. The 5P seemed to get a little greasy near the end of their life. Not sure if the Michelin will as well but I was getting better life out of the Michelin.

Yes
I've run both the PSS and the Conti 5's and they are very comparable with a slight edge to the PSS. Everyone jocks the PSS, and I have to say the Conti's are right there with them for everyday street driving.

I have used both Continental Contactsport 5P (previous tyre) and Michelin Pilot Super Sport (current). That said the Contis were on the factory 18s and the PSS are on wider 19s. The ride is definetly firmer on 19s which could be just the extra diameter/lower profile or a combination of diameter/lower profile and tyre construction. I give the grip to the PSS but the Contis are still excellent. Wet is probably similar although I have yet to experience what worn PSSs are like in the wet. Tyre life I suspect will favour the Contis - I wll not know until I have worn out the PSSs.

For a similar price point and you want max performance go PSS. If you can save good money on the Contis and you are never going to push to the limit buy the Contis for a tyre 99 out of 100 people would be very pleased with (assuming they do not want comfort or eceonomy tyres and lets face it you are not driving a Prius).

PSS grippier, better cornering and are at 10k miles with maybe half tread life left.

So what you're looking for is a PSS. Def PSS. Great ride and grippy

I currently have Continental ExtremeContact DW tires.

In everyday, normal driving situations, they feel just as responsive as the PSS but they're a bit quieter and soak up road imperfections better. In heavy rain, the grip is phenomenal.

I like the Continental DWs more than my old 5Ps.

If I lived in a dry climate with plenty of well paved canyon roads, I'd have the Michelin PSS.

No one can tell you what the right tire is for you. We can make recommendations but you then need to read up on those suggestions to see if the tires meet the criteria you've established.

The conti's are going to be a little cheaper but not a heck of a lot. I have the conti's on my SL and 500E. I like them a lot. Quiet ride and they do seem to absorb the roadway imperfections. I have not tried the Michelins so I can't speak for them.

Thank you guys for the great comments. I will probably go with PSS since it's pretty hot and dry weather here!

I apologize for slight threadjack, but please elaborate on rubbing issue with 245 fronts. Is your car stock, spacers, lowered, etc.?

I vote for PSS. Very popular tire in the corvette segment as well as probably the better all around tire for the price. Sadly the conti 5P is not made in the widebody sizes, but even if it were, I would give the slight edge to the PSS.

Also a great tire to be considered. On average though, pricier than the PSS but a solid tire for grip. I believe they are about to launch, if not already, their RE-11A version of that tire.

Pirelli Pzero or Toyo Proxes T1 Sport (surprisingly one of the best tyres i've ever run)

On the Pirellis, the Pzero Trofeo R, has been getting great reviews on the porsche, GT-R forums. I believe the sizes are there for the benz, definitelly pricier than any other ones talked about on here for those sizes.

T1 Sport +1 In the dry and wet!! I'm running big power and they still manage to hold up well.

Might convert to Pirelli Pzero's though. The standard equipment on E63 AMG 2010. The reason i say that is because i've been driving around in one as a loan car for a week and i'm loving the tyres. I don't like the sidewall though, ugly.

T1 Sport sidewall is def one of the best out there.

Among what I have used, pzero, conti oem, pss and v12 hankook, I vote for pss hands down.
