You are holding the filter housing up-side down.

If you're referring to them not being in the garbage can, then yes.

Done. No butt dyno results yet or sound change, but it seems to idle at a lower rpm?

I would keep the set just for smog purposes...just in case.

Hang on to them. You cannot buy them separate from the boxes.

I still think these were backwards. Air flows in the intake at the front of the engine bay, into the airbox bottom (where I found a leaf and caked on dust), then up through the main filter (orange rim on it), through the charcoal, then past the MAF sensors. If that's right, then these arrows are pointing the wrong direction (down in this case when the box is reinstalled). Where is my logic wrong?

Perfectly fine to confirm my idiot status, but I don't get it.

I think you are correct when considering air entering the intake manifold when the engine is running. Maybe it has something to do with the intended purpose of the filters and that is to absorb gas fumes escaping in air exiting the engine when it is turned off. If this is the case then the flow is out of the engine and not into the engine. If this is the case then the filters are properly oriented. I don't know for sure if this is the case or the guy doing this boring job was having a bad day or in fact has a weird sense of humor.
