Track day - Tires and oil

Hi all,

I took my C63 estate (2011 facelift) to a track day last week, and have another track day on Thursday.

Had trouble all day with it going into limp mode, from research this is a common issue, I did a diagnostics test and it shows excessive coolant temp which is related to oil temperature?

I drive hard and like to drift (I drive in the British Drift Championships - not in this car though lol):

Short video clip for you:

http://instagram.com/p/rT_tC1kqzQ/?modal=true

I understand many people upgrade to the Black Series oil cooler, whilst I can do this in the future or use a Mocal larger oil cooler, I don't have time to change it between now and Thursday.

I'm running 0w40 Mobil 1 stuff, I've seen posts on here with people using Motul 5w40 Excess having better results, lower oil temps and less limp mode action, is this a worth while swap over? If so I will get some in her tomorrow.

Lastly tires, I'm running Bridgestone Potenza RE-S001 I think they are called, massive understeer and destroyed the tire, hell it's a heavy car but they don't like gripping not looking for a track day tire, as car is mostly on the street, but do people rate the Michelin Pilot Super Sport for wear and grip levels on the front? These Bridgestones didn't wear very well

I'm running ContinentalContiSport 5P on the rear and these seem to have chunks missing from them despite being brand new, how to PSS fair on the rear? I know I'm a animal, but needs tires that don't have bits falling of them!

Cheers,

M

There is no cure for the limp mode....the oil won't help...only cure is to upgrade to the "440 cool package" do a search and you'll find it.

Try dedicated track tires like Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

Pilot Super Sports are track-capable road tires whereas the Cup tires are meant for the track only.

There is a thread on here about a relatively easy mod of the grille airflow and its benefit to coooling. From memory the poster races C63s. Also threads re different oils.

I did a quick search and did not see what I was looking for. It may take you a little time to locate but it is worth reading. Last post in it would have been 6 months ago or more?

How about an idea that us oldtimers used to keep a car from overheating - turn the heat on as high as you can stand. It may not be enough, but you might be surprised at how much heat can be bled off.

I highly recommend the Michelin sport Cups or the Toyo R888

From my experience, switching oil to Royal Purple will not fix limp mode. You're out of luck.

You can try this:

Agreed.
Or just buy a cheap 2nd hand set of track tyres for you to thrash around the track.
That's what I did and car was perfect.

Thanks for all the helpful info guys!

I'm going to get some dedicated track days, your right, no point messing about with street tires.

I'm currently running 235/35/19 at the front and 265/30/19 at the rear.

Was going to switch out to a 245/35/19 at the front, good move?

Will also try and get one of these cooling panels to help direct air into the oil cooler, may even removed my grills on Thursday see if it helps allow more airflow, or remove the bumper

This is what my tires currently look like, I think I can kill them on the next track day before I swap, what do you reckon? Might get a bit of understeer lol they are bit on the edge. Will swap the fronts over as one seems to be worse than the other, probably due to mostly right hand bends:

Rear left (God I need an LSD!) - big chunking!

Also is this normal engine noise, I have the later facelift car, don't get that rattle on startup, just a little ticking, think it was always there, does yours make the same? This is cold for the record:

Cheers all,

M
