AMG says to use 5w40 in these engines.
0w40 is too thin and bleeds out of the lifters easier over time causing more lifter wear from increased cam to lifter clearance on start up. That is the tapping clicking noise you hear on start up. Lifters don't last forever and can become noisy over time.

Would you please show me where does AMG state to use 5W40 instead of the 0W40 in the M156?

If you've got lifter ticking noise, your lifters are worn. Period. The thicker oil is just going to mask the symptoms a little longer.
Again, I would really love to see a single MB-issued manual or document that says "use 5W40 instead of 0W40" in the M156.

taken it in yet? On cold starts I hear a tapping from the engine but i cant hear it if the hood is closed so i'm not overly concerned but will likely have someone check before the warranty is out

OP, you don't have headers do you? Because if you do you can hear unburnt petrol impacting the headers and making a clicking sound, it's prominent on large engines.

These guys also found the same issue with Mobil 1:
https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...l-1-again.html
Like someone states, for some easy street driving, probably fine, but for anyone who drives hard like me, it's not suitable for consistent oil temps. I want the best I can give my car. Saying that lifters were still noisy when leaving the car a while with Mobil 1 0w40 so for this alone I wouldn't use it but each to there own I guess Maybe the Mobil 1 "0" weight is too thin causing it to bleed off the lifters when sitting for a prolonged period?

It is not 'thinner' than other 40 weights, in fact measured viscosity is actually 'thicker' than some, look at the data sheets
Viscosity 100 deg C
Mobil 1 0w40 13.5
Mobil 1 formula M 5w40 13.4
At 302 deg F the mobil 1 0w40 has a higher viscosity than the motul 8100 5w40
Most wear occurs at cold start-up so the 0 is better than the 5. They are the same when hot and perform equally no matter how 'hard' you drive the car. Lol

The current bevo oil chart issued last month specs 0w40 or 5w40 with ONLY 229.5 spec for RoW except western europe
Updated 09/2014
Afaik the only actually approved, not 'meets' or recommended oil is mobil 0w40?

Again - can you please post a single URL from the PL or elsewhere where an official AMG rep has said to use the 5W40 over the 0W40?

So I got this ticking noise 3 times already. Always when I leave car for a week or so. Lasts for about 7 minutes.
Should I bring it in for the warranty work or just don't worry about it. And drive it every day?

The ticking sound after you turn off the car is def. coming from exhaust. I get it all the time when I beat on it and specially on hot days. Put your ears closer to the exhasust and you'll see.
The tapping tick from the engine I also get but only when I beat on my car and park it and turn it off right away. If you let your car run for few mins after you beat on it and then turn it off there will be no ticking when you start it up. The ticking goes away. Ran in past few advisors and they both told me it's common and most likely due to a lifter being stuck. I am not worried about it.

Incidentally, I had the ticking a few times last year. Dealer ended up replacing all the tappets under warranty. Hasn't happened again since.

Im getting a strange noise when engine is hot on a 2016 G63 AMG with under 10,000 KM on the clock.
It comes on and off only when the engine is reached maximum temperature.
Im attaching a video with the sound, I have uploaded it to dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/38l6k2guq2...44080.mp4?dl=0
Any suggestions/recommendations advice would be of maximum help.
Thanks a lot in advance.

kkelis - this is the W204 C63 forum and a year-old thread to boot that deals with valve lifter issues in the M156 engine. You may have more luck in getting an answer in a G-Wagen forum or other vehicles that use the M157 motor. Read the board FAQ.
The ticking in the video is the fuel injectors and perfectly normal. If you're talking about the "wowowo" sound that comes and goes, it could be any number of causes - but it is extrememly unlikely that you'll get an answer here. Ask in the relvant forums. Good luck.

ENV^2 - if you had bothered to read the OP's post, you would realize that oil viscosity has abolusltely NOTHING to do with the issue he is having. First of all, he has a Geländewagen with a 5.5L biturbo M157, not a C63 - and furthermore I don't hear any valve lifter noise whatsoever in the video. The only ticking is the normal fuel injectors pulsing. The sound that he is asking about is somethign else... possibly something driven by the accessoty belt or some clutch trying to engage. Thicker oil is not the answer to all questions in the universe... 42 is.

Understood. I figured C63 section would have c63 motor question. I couldn't listen to vid at work. Disregard my post then.

Hahaha well I am unfortunately selling mine so I don't have the willpower to argue in here. Plus I was wrong in this situation as I didn't even finish reading the post and thought I knew what I was talking about haha.
