Ipe exhaust drone

Hey guys,
Installed my new Ipe innotech exhaust on my c63 (2014 with eurocharged v5) yesterday.
It is a CAT back System.
Everything works flawless, build quality is great.

But one little problem - it drones at low rpm (1500-2200) - also with closed valves. Didn't know any drone with oem exhaust.

Any solutions to kill the drone?

Thanks for all suggestions!!

Get your money back. Apparently they don't know how to tune an exhaust

one idea is to weld the OEM resonators back in but is unknown territory it terms of end result. you could also try riding in a car with the eisenmann race exhaust and then appreciate the relative quiet afterwards

Obviously, I can't know if JR is kidding. But there are some threads on this forum about drone from the Ipe exhaust. Attached is a link one and one of the comments.

https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...-exhausts.html

Is the drone unbearable or is it only noticeable if you are looking out for it?[/

The drone was initially unbearable when driving slow for the first 2 weeks I had it then I got used to it. It only happens when accelerating again under load in that rpm range. Higher rpms, the drone disappears. Again this is due to primary cats being removed I believe. The car will also need to adjust to it as well as my car ran a little rich at the beginning due to exhaust smell and then toned down a little a few weeks later. Exhaust build quality is awesome though and for the price it's exceptional. There will be a break in period for the rear mufflers too so you will notice white residue and smoke within the first five days....normal so don't worry about it....just residue burning through inside the muffler. With the valve open it is loud but sounds like a race car. It's a tuned sound and not a messy loud sound like some other c63 I've heard with other exhausts. Overall I like it but as I've mentioned ive planned to put factory cats and headers back in to drop the sound a little.

Found That thread a few minutes ago.
I only have the cat back system.

He mentioned the drone comes from deleting cats.

It is really annoying as it drones exactly at Highway cruising Speed

The drone is normal and it is due to no primary cat. I asked for the 200 cell cat kit and this helped but the drone remained. You can try adding 2 high flow resonators or a resonated 3 in x pipe to replace the ipe rear section x pipe. Only solution for my daily driver was to remove the header and use a shorty header with the oem primary cat. That is my current set up now and has been for the past year. You will loose a lot of power without the header but it's a happy medium if you use the car eveyday.

I would say drive it around for a month or so and see if you can get used to it. If not then add resonators to lessen the sound but keep the flow. If that doesn't work then you need to go about putting a shorty header in or the stock headers back with cat.

Just saw your posts....that was my review a while back.

Ok if your running cat back only...do you just have the rear end which starts at x pipe? Any other mods to exhaust like removing secondary cat?

No other mods - only this x-pipe thing and the rear silencers with valves

I had no drone with the cat back set up. However once I installed the full system then I did start to get a drone at bang on 70 mph.......which is a little annoying. However at 75mph it goes away.
Still love the fact I can open the valves and make it really loud or have them closed and be fairly civilised.

I think it is because the cat back replaces the resonators. I have MBH lth with catted mids and x-pipe to the stock cat back and I get no drone.

I also think it is because of the x-Part.

It is really annoying - and with open valves it drones so hard you get a headache. And that is not exaggerated

Oem resonator part does not fit the back resonators from ipe.
Would have to Cut them out and weld a piece back in.

Didn't want to destroy my Oem exhaust

This x-pipe also killed the raspy sound. Am I right here?

Could i get it back by adding straight pipes instead of the x?

Just found another post here:

"Without adequate exhaust gas volume(just cruising/not stomping) the exhaust pulses will start to collide and cause droning."

What is meant with adequate gas volume?

Damn, I start thinking, that I should have kept the OEM exhaust alone...

Straight pipes will return the raspy sound of the OEM exhaust and maybe even increase it as the resonator has a small H-pipe in it. You may still experience drone with straight pipes. The x-pipe balances the exhaust pulses from side to side and smooths out the sound.

The exhaust is designed to handle the flow of the engine at WOT and max rpm. When the engine is at cruise rpm the exhaust is not filled to capacity and the exhaust pulses can bounce around in the tubing. Depending on the design and layout of the exhaust this must be able to cause drone.

I would say it should be way quiter than mine as I do not have secondary cats other than the high flow 200cell units. I am guessing due to your car being an estate, you are hearing it more. It is definitely the ipe muffler size...the sound your hearing and drone is normal for the ipe. You can add resonators....the dynomax xpipe muffler was one I looked at before.

The end result is to replace the ipe muffers with something else.

Nope, wasn't joking at all.

Like I said, obviously IPE didn't take the time to tune the exhaust to eliminate drone at highway speeds.

Keep the rpms over 3000 and you won't have a problem

This sucks. You can try selling it locally if it's that annoying.
Where are you from? I see you have a C63 Estate

I'm from Germany (94315 Straubing) - and jop it is an estate

Basically I would be more than happy with the exhaust. Sound is awesome - really deep and powerful. Poweroutput is good. Even downshifts are smoother, it does not kick in so hard any more.

But I am really sensitive for any background noises - and my wife even more.
She already does not want to drive with me anymore - and the exhaust is only 2 days old now

I would check the install.
When i had mine with just the cat back system, I had no drone.

Like i said previously its only when i added the LTH that the drone started.

But what could be wrong with installation?

It is only like 4 screws to tighten

I mean serious - what could be done wrong?
